exhaust question

What is the purpose of the x pipes and y pipes? Do they increase noise or power? I am soon going to put a exhaust system on my new truck. And also How much more of sound increase is the dump exhaust than the dual exhaust?

All that an X-pipe of H-pipe does is equals or balances the pressures from both banks(left and right) and gives the exhaust a lot cleaner and better sound. Depending on the vehicle dumping the exhaust may be louder or just alittle quieter. You can still run dual exhaust and dump it though. All dumping is, is dumping the exhaust down under the truck instead of having ugly pipes coming out from the back or side of the truck.

A properly executed X-pipe install (as close to the motor, after the cats as possible) enhances cylinder scavenging. Needs to be close as that's where the energy is. It's not primarily just for sound ....

MagnaFlow's stainless steel Tru-X crossover pipe represents a significant leap forward in technology over traditional H-pipes. The more gentle radius allows for better exhaust gas scavenging, noise cancellation and better balance between cylinder banks. The result is a significant increase in power and torque but a reduction in db sound levels... the best of both worlds.
