installing headers on your own

i bought a set of ford motorsport headers for my truck. direct bolt on application. instead of paying the shop 400 smackers to do it, would it be easier if i did it myself? i already bought the headers and is one of the last mods to my truck besides e fans, until i get my truck paid off, then it's getting blown! so to anyone that has done this, on a scale of 1 - 10 hows it rank?

do it yourself. save you 4 bills, and you will be confident with the job. many shops wont warranty this type of work. so if they forget to even tighten something, then it is at your cost. when you are done with the install, get back to us and let us know on a scale from 1-10 how easy it was

I put long tubes on mine and they were a pain in the ***. I would say shorties would be 3-5 it all depends on the tools you have and what you know about your truck.

I had shorties on my truck, decided to upgrade to long tubes. Took the shorties off and had the long tubes on in 2 hours...

It all depends on how many manifold studs you break getting the old ones out. Could be a few hours, could be a couple of days. Not really mechanically difficult, just a pain in the ***. Good luck.

Do a search as I did. My profesional installer charged me $350 for my JBA install. It took him about 7.5 hours from beginning to end. A price I would gladly pay again, he said it was one PITA.
A seach on this forum will reveil 1.5 - 3 day jobs by some do-it-yourselfers. Hint, use "Stage 8" locking header bolts....you only want to do this once for sure.

I've installed headers before and I'll never do it again. MAJOR PITA

I used a 1/4" ratchet to break my factory manifold nuts and studs loose... I soaked them in penetrating oil for a few days, every night i pulled it in the garage, and they all came right out. just get them tight, dont bother torquing them....

some will be easy, many will be a major PITA... especially on the 97-03... when i had my manifolds done, it took 7 hours by my friend Cooter(haha) whos a ford pro.. he charged me for 4 tho.. 2 studs broke and 3 were hard to get out.. im glad i didnt attemt it.. its not that hard mechanically but if they break u better kno how to get them out.. 7 hours for cooter woulda been 3 days for me lol..

Shortys only took me 3 hours to take off stock mainifolds and put on shortys *no studs broke* to take off shortys and put on longtubes took about 4 hours. its really not that hard just some of the bolts are a lil on the hard side to get to. If you do most of your stuff yourself give this a try its not to hard id rate it about a 6-7 if its longtubes.

I would hate to do this to an 04+, not real sure about the 03s but it could be easier. Theres too much s**t under the 04+ hood for me to even consider it
