I decided today I'd go get high flow cats put in to get a little more volume, and apparently no one stocks them?
went to one place and he said they have to order them. went to midas, and got a whole story about how it'd cost thousands to put in a new cat system since the stock system was at least $1000. I said that I found a website (troyer performance) that sold high flow maggies for $82, and that I could replace all 4 with just 2 of those and it'd be legal. he said "no way" and continued telling me it just wasnt worth paying thousands. he wasn't trying to sell me anything, just simply saying it wouldn't work.
I'm pretty sure he's full of crap, but now I need someone to tell me that I can use those cats, especially seeing as how I just ordered 2.

From what I understand: replace the front two with pipe, and the rear 2 w/ maggies? I want legal. no time to be changing stuff out for inspections. and while we're at it...this will make me louder, right? cause my straight through maggie muffler isn't cutting it....

Find a good performance Exhaust shop ..... Midas isn't a place to go to do something "different" if you want a swap they work
High flow cats
I had to go to three different places before I found a shop to install my high flows, but it was worth all the driving, they did an excellent job.The magnaflows will work, leave in your rear O2 sensors and you won't get a cel.Find a shop that does custom installs to do your cats. The quote you recieved of $1,000 is crazy! the cats from Troyer are $85.00 apiece,if you go on e-bay,I believe you can find them cheaper than that. You shouldn't pay more than $100.00 to install your cats, thats what I paid,so you can base your install cost from that. You wont be disappointed w/ the cats after they are installed, frees up power, nice deep rumble @ idle, you'll like the sound.Hope this helped, good luck w/ your install.
Phill is right, basically the big name shops won't do it because they are a part of a big nation wide chain and all the big brass at the top of the ladder don't know the first thing about cars or trucks. They all believe that if they even mess with anything emissions wise, unless it's malfunctioning, then they'll be hit with thousands in fines from the EPA. So if they install hi-flows for some Joe Schmoe and there was nothing wrong with the stock cats and the top dudes find out they'll flip the @#$% out and fire whoever did the work.
sweet. thanks guys. like I said I ordered the cats so there's no going back. after driving my girlfriends silverado w/ the 5.3 and flowmaster 40's I can barely even hear my truck
I hope I can come close to hers after the install.

I have an appointment at Midas on wenesday to get a full true dual exhaust put on my truck. I'm providing the mufflers, cats (2) and tips. All they said Id have to do is cut the old system off first, to keep them from getting into trouble.
I do have a quick question: my stock truck has, stating with the manifolds, o2 (for engine), angled cat, o2 (for coverter), and then the straight cat. So in this setup the second o2 sensor is reading the first cat, right? this seems to be a different setup from what I've been reading on here.

I put a single magnaflow cat on my old GMC and a super 40 SIDO, it was loud as snot. If that's what you want your gonna love your truck from now on.
BTW I installed the cat so it would pass smog, they run super clean too, so you don't need to worry about emissions, hope you enjoy your new exhaust

i agree the small performance exhaust shops are the beat way to go. i needed a new cat for my dakota and midas quoted me at like 300$ parts and labor. i went to napa picked up a universal cat for 50$ my local exhaust guy welded it in for 50$.when i told him what midas wanted he laughed.
