Stainless & Rust

I installed a Magna cat back in the summer, it appears to be forming rust on the pipes and muffler, I thought this stainless would not rust, any one else experience this problem?

What grade of SS? I'm guessing it's 304. More than likely it's just surface rust. Not all SS is rust proof, but all is rust resistant.

Stainless isn't rust proof, only extremely rust resistant, and especially where the welds are there is crappy steel probably not 100% stainless, and unless it was an absolutely perfect weld with a certified welder doing it using stainless welding rod, there are microscopic amounts of air in there and impure steel that can cause rust unless properly welded or sealed with high temp paint.

Thanks for the responses, it is t304 and surface rust, I understand there is a lifetime warranty, just was concerned if this is a natural occurance and should I just get a wire brush and clean it off.

Hello,
What you are experiencing is surface rust which is not detrimental to the system’s integrity. Surface rust usually occurs in excessive humid or wet conditions and particularly in areas where the roads are salted. This can be easily cleaned off with a scouring pad or a Scotch Brite sponge with soap and water. Stainless will not rust through however stainless is still susceptible to surface rust due to its physical properties.
