Painted stock tailpipe?

I just bought an '05 SCab FX4 last weekend, and this week I took it to the shop to have a liner sprayed in. Of course they also wanted to sell me on an undercoating, and while he was taking a look under the body, he pointed out to me that the tailpipe is already painted a flat black. His comments were that it could have been to cover up some rust or something, but I think it would be pretty tough to get much rust on a tailpipe that's only about 2 years old.

This may be a stupid question, but I just wonder if there are any thoughts out there? Does anybody else have a FX4 OffRoad with a painted tailpipe, or is this definitely something that took place after the factory?

If its not stainless steel, 1 winter it will be rusted looking. My F250 had a underbody coating and my tips are black also.

I have seen some "less than reputable" used car dealerships that will spray down the underside of vehicles with flat black spraypaint to make it look good. I even saw paint over dirt in the wheelwell. Just a thought.

Thanks for the replies. I suppose I'm just a bit skeptical of used vehicles because of a previous experience, but I'm stuck dealing with it because I won't buy cars new, either. Whatcanyado? Anyway, everything looks to be in top shape otherwise, so I guess I'll stop worrying.

I dont want to scare you but it could have been wrecked becuse after a car or truck is painted at a bodyshop they will spray black sray paint to cover up any overspray.

If they're a janky shop....yes. I paint at a body shop, and that's a nono for us. Pipe gets oversprayed, you clean it off. Which honestly only takes a little thinner on a towel. Hell, wipe it off. Worst case scenario is there is paint or rust under it, in which case you just spray black back on
