True Dual Exhaust Question
I have an 01 Supercrew with the 5.4 and I decided to go with a true dual exhaust. I've got 1 magnaflow hight flow cat on each side with 2 flowmaster 40 series. I have a concern with how both sides don't sound the same. The drivers side sound fine but the passengers side has kind of a "sputtering sound coming out. I've changed out all the coils and plugs so I know thats not the cause. I've been told that I should have some sort of "X" or "H" pipe. I went to a couple of muffler shops in my area and they told me that it wouldn't really matter if I had one or not, it would be a waste of money for me. I was just wondering if anyone else out there has experienced this problem with their F 150. It sounds like their is not equal pressure on both sides but, I'm not an exhaust pro. Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

hmm, well if you dont have an x pipe that really could be it, once the sound ecos threw the pipes and goes into an X pipe right in the center it all meets up, then exits out threw the two pipes, mufflers, and tips. Thats what I think it could be.
Also, are the Flowmaster 40s both the same? 1 isn't origional & the other isn't a Super 40 or Delta Flow?

I have true dual 3" with no meet (X or H pipe) but they both exit passenger side next to one another so you don't hear anything small and abnormal. Ask someone else to listen to it and see if maybe its just you
remember to that the passenger side is a straight shot out and the driver side has a few bends in it. so that the passenger side being more of a free flowing side will give off a popping type noise that i beleive you are hearing which is unrestricted to a point free flow exhaust. and xpipe will balance out the pulses giving you an even sound and better performance.

Both of the flowmasters are the same. I went to a another muffler shop today and he put his hand up to the tips on each side. He told me the passenger side ( which is the straighter path) had more pressure. The shop that installed the setup told me it could be a bad flowmaster and he would swap it out tomorrow. I kinda think it's because there is no x pipe but, if he's gonna swap it out for free...I'll try that first and if it continues to sound f'ed up...then I'm just gonna tell him to put an x in there. I'll let yall know how it turns out tomorrow.

Hey,I thought I was the only one with this problem...I have a 04 4.6 reg cab.I had true duals put on mine with 40 series flows.I too have the same problem.Driver side sounds great,nice idle sound etc...but my pasngr side sounds like what you had mentioned.Sputter,kinda floppy spitting sound.Please let me know what you find out with your ride,I too would love to know what the problem turns out to be.
P.S When the shop you took it to installed the mufflers,did they place one on top of the other and weld the two together? Thanks.

I went and got the X pipe installed and it cured the problem. No more nasty sound out of the passenger side. It actually evened out the pressure on both sides. I"m very happy with it now, even thought it idles a little more quietly now but, still sounds good on acceleration. I'll definately take mildly toned down idle over the the "sputtering" noise of an uneven exaust flow because the 'sputtering" just amplified during acceleration. So for those of you who may have this problem....go ahead and get the "X" pipe....the 1st time. Even though it put me back a little more than $100! Oh yeah....and to answer your question Moose21, the flows are vertically mounted under the heatshield and welded together.
