2.5" vs 3" pipe
2.5" vs 3" pipe
I just got off the phone with a sales rep at Magnaflow. I was inquiring about which muffler I should get for my truck, the 2.5" in/out or 3" in/out version of Magnaflows 5" x 11" x 22" muffler. I was told that with going to 3" (from my stock 2.5") I would loose some low end torque because of loss of back pressure - but I would gain some minimal mid to high range torque. I realize that the gains would be minimal, but better than stock. Then I asked about which would be better as far as tail pipe diameter's go. He said that the mandrel bent 3" pipe (part no. 15038) would be better than the factory crush bent 2.5" pipe. Right off I was thinking that he's trying to make a sale, but after thinking about it, I think he's got a point. I'm thinking that wherever there's a bend in the factory tail pipe, the diameter is reduced and I believe there is 5 bends. So, I'm thinking of going with the 2.5" in/out muffler and the 3" mandrel bent tail pipe - both from Magnaflow.
Any comments?

My main concern regarding losing low end torque is about my 4.6 for towing (what I would call medium-to-heavy size loads) purposes and that I'll be putting on bigger tires soon.

nothing wrong with 3" muffler & 3" tailpipe (mandrel bent only, otherwise you are wasting your money)
JBA's exhaust is probably the best fittnig system on hte 97-03 f150 and sells for a good price, i love mine

I just listened to the sound clip's at the Magnaflow website for a 03-06 Ford Expedition with cat-back kit #15755 (which has the SI/SO, 5x11x22 muffler, 3" piping) and I really like the sound compared to others - such as sound clips from Flowmaster and JBA. It's not to loud, nice tone, not real aggresive, just right. I wonder how mine will sound with just the new muffler and tail pipe. Probably pretty close. A few more weeks, and I'll find out!
Oh ya, I'm more concerned about performance...

I bought the gibson cat back system from laguna speed shop for $285 I believe. Goes together great and sounds good too. I am from the school of flow not noise so I am really pleased. gives an aggresive growl but not an annoying roar all the time. I believe mine is all mandrel bent 3" pipe, except the inlet which is a 2.5 to 3 conversion. Hopefully it goes bye bye with headers/high flow cats/y replacement. hope it helps

magnaflow has a good deep sound, same with JBA, though i feel JBA's sound is more aggressive and less raspy when you get on it
the magnaflow will retail for around 400 but i got my JBA for 300 from AJ-USA, ajusa.com . itll sound quiet when you first put it on and takes a month or so to break in
