2006 F-150 STX 4.6L 4x4

Parts is Parts:
Flowmaster original 40 SI/DO Ebay = $40 +$10(shipping)
Adapter pipe = $15
Turn downs = (2 @ 4.94) =9.90
Clamps =(3 @ 2.28) = 6.84
Hangers = (2@ 5.88) = 11.76
Forgetting to charge me for a tube of lithium grease
for another project = -$2.99
Paint = $4.18
misc. tip = $5
Project cost = $109.69

Install:

Building the system
-I bought the Flowmaster off ebay from a guy that bought it for a project and then never used it. Since it has a 3" ID inlet and my truck has a 2.5" stock pipe I need an adapter made. I went to the local monro muffler on my lunch break and had one of the guys expand a 12" piece of 2.5" pipe. Since the wall of the flow are pretty think I didn't think I could get it to clamp down tight if I slipped the new pipe inside so I tried to make it go over. The shop couldn't get the pipe big enough so the guy said he would just weld it on for me. 15 minutes later he handed it to me and said "how does $15 bucks sound?" I head out to the AutoZone and get clamps hanger and a 2.5" turndown, of course they only stock one so I have to get another at advanced auto. I head home and find out the dia of the outlet on the flow and the turndown are the same. Next day I head back to Monro and ask my buddy to expand the turndowns. He throws them on the machine and 5 minutes later he says " no charge". I say no way and tell him lunch is on me. Now I go home. bolt it to together and figure what the heck, I'll slap some high temp paint, maybe I'll get another month of life out of it. Here is how it turned out:

Time to install

Remove Stock Exhaust
-removed all the bolts from the stock exhaust hanger and loosened two band clamps on existing pipes. But jack under stock exhaust and pulled exhaust backward to free it from butt joint (front) band clamp, then lower it to the ground. I then removed the straight pipe in front of the muffler and brought the rest of the exhaust forward over the axel. No need to jack the truck up.
The old lady helped me do this (only point where you need and extra set of hands)
Install new exhaust
-took the straight piece of existing pipe and put it onto my pipe. I then lifted the whole thing into place with my floor jack so it would hold it in the air while I tighten the existing band clamp. Now I need to figure out how to hang it from the truck. This is the only thing I didn't plan out. I used the two hanger and my 3rd clamp to hold the pipe in front of the inlet. These hangers aren't the greatest so I used two. It is freakin solid. You can see the redundant clamp system here:

I reused the nut/bolt that when to a stock hanger for one of the hangers and put a stainless steel bolt through an existing hole for the other. I had to go to the hardware store for the bolts so naturally I stopped for beer. This project would have been a two beer job but only onewas drank do to the late arrival of said beverage.

But How does it sound??

Not sure how to record a sound clip but it's LOUD. It sounds very badass. Louder than a stock mustang, louder than any stupid ricer, louder than the Hemi at the gas station that felt the need to gun his truck while I was leaving in the Honda w/ beer. It's got a deep little rumble at idle then roars when you step on it. It doesn't pop at all, just DEEP rumble. When you let off the gas while driving you can't hear it. The only saving grace is that when the truck shifts into top gear around 60mph, it's as quiet as stock. I don't understand how people can say they want louder, this thing is almost to loud. I wonder if pipes out the back would quiet it down some.

Things I learned??
High temp engine paint block paint doesn't work on an exhaust. It has bubbled and fallen off already. It was smoking like an SOB after the 1st run and I was afraid that it was going to burst into flames. Tomorrow I am going to take it off, wire wheel it down, and repaint with high temp wood stove paint. You can't burn that off.

hey that looks pretty good, and i bet it sounds awesome! my buddy has a 2004 5.4 with turndowns almost just like that and i love the way it sounded. not too loud, but enough rumble to know that its not a stock exhaust. i want to do the same thing with my 98 4.6 now

no diff in power that i can tell

i think i am going to have pipes run out the back this week

Let me know how it sounds, I put one on my Expo and it is still quite...
