Modifying stock exaust

I just bought a 94 f250 from a guy who said he gutted the stock exaust but left the cats. I cannot find the cats or see the body. But yesterday I looked inside the muffler and I saw screens.
Are these the cats? I do not want to cut the cats, just insure the muffler is gutted because it is pretty quite.
I also want to fasion a turndown should I just bend the pipe or whats the easiest way?

Here is the muffler, the pipe ends shortly after the left side of the picture, this is because the turnout secton rusted away.

I'm no exhaust expert, but that looks like the catalytic converter. Especially the design of it, and it looks like it's pretty far forward (just off the head pipe). Maybe the person who sold you the truck had the story right. Just my opinion built on limited knowledge.

Ive never seen one quite like that, I believe its a muffler and cats all in one. This muffler looking thing comes directly off the headers. I dont want to cut the cats for risk of felony and no gun rights.

Uh, thats a catalytic converter. and by the looks of it, it needs to be replaced. no muffler there at all. your best bet is to replace the cat and run a muffler with a turnout just in front of the rear tire.

So will it currently pass inspection? It passed in va now I need to pass it nc. This truck is really very quiet. Is the cat holding that much noise back. Is that just a single cat or are there more in there? I was expecting cat-cat-cat-cat- muffler or even no muffler at all. I plan to eventually install flowmasters.

Looks like a cat to me, if it is really quiet it might be plugged up. It might or might not pass, some states have visual inspections, some have sniffer, some require it to go past the cab, others out from underneath. It really varies, here in IA we have no inspections at all.

Take it to the muffler shop and put true straight pipes on it. I have a buddy with dual straight pipes. It is very loud.

Thats for sure a cat. If its that quiet it is stopped up. In NC, depending on your county, ALL 95' model and newer require sniffer test connected via computer link to Raleigh. If vehicle fails, a rejection sticker is installed. You have thirty days to rectify problem. If not corrected a TAX block notice goes on vehicle through State DMV and can not renew tags or registration until 250 dollar fine is paid and vehicle passes emission test. If older that 95 No one cares.... go figure?

I agree go to muffler shop and get get system installed... if money is tight? saw it off and use old coat hangar to secure whats left to any available place on frame and drive on!
