Flowmaster 50...somewhat disappointed

Been away from the Ford truck scene for awhile, since I sold my 2000 Expy. I sold that because living in Hawaii isn't the best place for a full size vehicle like an Expy or F150. I'm moving to Florida soon and earlier this week I got a great deal on an '04 F150 Screw, 5.4 with lots of options, and I couldn't wait for a cat-back!! After reading through all the forums here and discussing it with a muffler shop I chose the Flowmaster 50 SUV. I really wanted a 40 but I have a 3k mile cross country trip ahead of me and was a little concerned about resonance. I don't mind loud but didn't want the family to "suffer" if you know what I mean. I went with SI/DO and stock size 2 1/4" pipes with 3" tips. Well, the 50 SUV lives up to its selling point, I'll say that much. It's just too quiet for me. Idling in the driveway, you would never know it was anything other than a stock muffler. Has a nice throaty rumble on acceleration but not loud at all. I hear more road noise on the highway than the 50. I could have gone with larger pipes but was also thinking about potential loss of low end torque. The 50 sounds nice, just quieter than I hoped. I'm still happy with it, just want more RAWR, lol!! Hell, the worst thing that can happen is I have the 50 cutoff and a 40 put on. If there are others out there with a '04 5.4 Screw (with a top in my case) and are concerned about too loud, the 50 SUV is a safe bet. I considered Magnaflow but none of the muffler shops here sell them...strange. Hey, I'm a Ford truck owner again, it's all good!!

Welcome back as a Ford owner. I have the Flowmaster 40 and there is very slight noise in the cabin. Just enough to enjoy. You might give it a couple of hundred miles break-in. I was disappointed with mine at first, then it opened up, and sounds great now. The 50 is definitley quieter, but I would give it a little time before swapping.

Yea I'll definitely wait awhile. I think I'm spoiled by my 95 Grand Cherokee Limited with a 5.2. It has a Flowmaster on it, think it's an original 40, but not sure since it was on when I bought it. It sounds awesome, almost like straight pipes when it is cold and idling, but after warming up and while driving it's just a nice rumble.

If you want quite, go with 50 series.

If you want a good loud sound go with the 40 series. I get mine done next week.

Something you guys need to realize is that in the truck, you don't hear whats behind the truck. If you don't think the 50 has good tone, go and stand behind it while someone else rev's it up. That'll change your tune. Then, you always have the origonal 40, super 40, and 40 with deltaflow technology!

98Navi is right, it has a nice tone when you're behind it a someone is revving it. I was just a little surprised at how quiet it was at idle, inside and out. I think it's a good choice if you want to be cautious about too loud. There is probably more noise behind me than I think and it's doing its job and keeping things quiet inside. I had a 2000 Expy with a 40 on it and I really liked the rumble but it may have gotten annoying after a few days on the road. I have a cross country drive to make and needed a little extra quiet. 50 was a good choice.

I have a 50 with the SI/DO and it is quiet on the inside, but i can here the wife coming down the street and turning in the driveway. I had the 40 on my 03 Expy and hated the noise at 65 mph.

I'll never forget when I got the 40 put on that Expy and came home. I was probably a half-mile down the road at the stop sign and the first thing she said was...'heard you coming after the stop"....I was like YES, money well spent!

Flowmaster 50's.

Quiet cabin and awesome low growl from the rear with DI/DO Flowmaster 50 and 3" tips.
One drwback is that they are not loud enough to drown out the old lady's bitchin'.

Get yourself a SI/DO Flowmaster Super 40 muffler...it is different than the original 40 series, and is awesome...I was like you and wanted something I could hear around town, and even when idleing. When cruising down the interstate at 70-85 you cannot hear anything, I hear my intake more than I do my exhaust. But my exhaust got louder when I got my intake.

They are great mufflers...their selling point is they are just about as loud outside as the original 40 but without the extreme resonance inside the cab...your family wont be annoyed with the Super 40....

You wont be dissapointed if you try one... Goodluck

You say you had the Flowmaster 50-Series SUV installed...this is a larger bodied muffler and is significantly quieter than the 40-Series. You should try the Flowmaster 50-Series Street Series SI/DO...smaller bodied muffler with a more aggressive sound than the SUV Series...that probably would have fit your needs more effectively.

Go back to where you had it installed and ask for some help on a swap.

I am going to have a Flowmaster SUV 50 SI/DO installed next week. Question is: Is there a sound difference with tips exiting in ther rear as opposed to each side behind the wheels?

Having grown up in the 50's I tend to like the appearance of the exhaust out the rear with the stainless tips.

Not really a significant difference between behind the tires or straight out the back. Most folks that tow prefer behind the tires (so not to be blowing on whatever they're towing directly)...downside is you got to clean the tips a LOT more than out the back....
