Question Exhaust Help -- PLEASE -- Magnaflow 11385

I have been asking some questions but haven't been getting any answers. After some more research, I think I have decided to go with the Magnaflow 11385 muffler. It's a DI/DO(2.25"/2.25") with the Tru-X crossover built in. I will be, of course, eliminating the stock y-pipe.

I have 2 questions regarding this setup.

1. Does muffler placement effect performance and or sound? For instance, should I put the muffler as close to the cats as possible?

2. Does the length of the output pipes effect performance and or sound? I would like to exit the pipes BEFORE the rear tire. I'm assuming shorter pipes would make it louder, but I am concered that ending the pipes too early could kill my exhaust velocity resulting in lost bottom end.
Thanks for any help.
