Question Battery/ECM reset necessary/important??

Hey all. Getting ready to do first mod... SISO gibson cat-back exhaust. Is it really necessary to disconnect the battery prior to doing mods? Does the ECM really "learn" the new set up? Like anyone else I want to get the most from my mods, but this ECM "learning" is sort of a "magic box" thing to me. i don't understand it. I can't find any mention of it in the owners manual, I can't even find break-in recommendations ('06 FX-4 SuperCab, 5.4L). Maybe I overlooked all this info. Please help guys. At least clear up Ford neewbie cornfusion!!

I recently put a Magnaflow cat back system on, they also recommend you disconnect the battery.
