FM DF 40 Series Too quiet!!!

Hi, This is my first post to this forum. I have a 2000 F-150 with a 5.4L, Off-Road 4x4. On friday i had a Flowmaster 40 series 2.5 SI/DO Deltaflow muffler with two 12" long 3.5 inch magnaflow tips. It sounds nice and deep, just not very loud at all. I also have a K&N 77 Series intake but that is about all i have done to the truck. I have not touched the Y-Pipe or Cats and do not want to invest too much more money into the truck as I am dumping thousands of dollars into restoring my 1967 Firebird. I just want the exhaust to sound louder. If i do buy a Y pipe i see the are 2.5 in and 3 in out. Do i then run a reducer to 2.5 inch pipe to go into my flowmaster muffler. Will this increase the sound, or do i go ahead and replace the cats with two hi flow cats. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I cannot run duals with no mufflers because we require mufflers in the chicago area and when you get pulled over, most cops do check under the vehicle to see what you have if it is loud. Thanks for your input and happy truckin. Pete P.S. if anyone needs a deep wedgewood blue topper made by A.R.E. I am currently taking offers for it. It is in good condition with one scratch on the drivers side.

Get an IMCO muffler at fulllineexhaust.com. They're louder than a Flowmaster. Why did you get the Deltaflow? FM Deltaflows are quiet. I think IMCO has the sound your looking for.

After you click on the link above, look down to your left and click on "shop online at our stores."

The imco does not sound as deep as the flowmaster. I have heard it on another f150. It is louder, but not nearly as deep. The imco had a more hollow sounding exhaust when having the same setup that i do now. Any more suggestions with keeping the flowmaster muffler as i like the sound but just want it to be louder would be appreciated. Thanks Pete

If your going with Flowmaster and you want it loud, get the "40 series" but NOT the "Delta-Flow" 40 series. The Delta Flow series mufflers have reduced interior and exterior sound levels. The regular 40 series doesn't, and is louder.

Peacemaker, sounds good, the original only comes in 3.00 inlet 2.5 dual outlets, what would i do to connect the 2.5" pipes to the 3.00 inlet, use a reducer in the opposite fashion? Thanks and do you know any benefit of the y pipe, i have read a ton about them, but havent really had anyone say if sound is increased, just heard that it is deeper. Thanks Pete

Yeah, a reducer would work. I hear the y-pipe opens up the exhaust alot more, which would result in better exhaust flow, more hp, and a few more mpg's. The oem y-pipe is very restrictive, so antime you free up the air moving out of the engine your making your engine work more efficiently.

A shop will have a pipe expander and reducer. You can expand the pipe to the muffler, and reduce the muffler pipe a bit, and they'll fit fine

In other words, is it worth it to switch to the original 40 series and spend another 80 dollars on the muffler, or use the money and buy magnaflow hi flow cats for 110 shipped from ebay. Along with the high flows use the flowmaster y pipe. Any ideas are helpful, trying to buy the things ill need on monday so i can have it all by friday. THanks Pete

Does anyone in the forum have a suggestion for what i should do which would be the cheapest way to increase the sound of my SI/DO Deltaflow 40 Series. Bear in mind that i just cannot cut the rear cats off, i was thinking a new y pipe and high flow cats, any other suggestions. A local exhaust shop told me to make it straight pipes. He would eliminate the y, cut off the muffler and just weld in pipes leaving all stock cats in place. Does that sound right. Would I need a X or H pipe in there too. I dont know about you but all the exhaust guys here in the chicago area are not talkers, they get real pissy if you ask questions. He said 95 dollars to have the work done. I want loud but i also dont want it to sound like sh......! Will it be louder, or will it sound poppy or run rough. This is my everyday vehicle. All opinions are welcome.

A local exhaust shop told me to make it true duals he would eliminate the y, cut off the muffler and just weld in pipes after the cats. Does that sound right. If it does, how would that actually make the truck sound, would it be poppy, louder? He said 95 dollars to have the work done. I want loud but i also dont want it to sound like sh......! Try this:

If you want to keep the same muffler, have one output in front of the rear tire, and have the other exiting under the truck (basically a turndown). Make sure that both exit pipes are the same length.

If you decide to change mufflers, try going with a single 3in SI/SO original 40 series. The SI/DO is only for looks.

Good luck my friend...
