Super 40 Sound Description (For Higdogg)

Hey man, I know you've wanted this for a while! I finally figured out who had the red truck with the Super 40 and I asked him to post about it. Here ya go:

Inside depending on your definition of "drone" then there may be one. Idling sounds perfect IMO, not loud enough to worry about waking the neighbors but its soft and deep outside and slightly noticeable inside. Lower rpms are also soft but very deep both inside and out. At mid range rpms is when you can hear a pretty good exhuast note from inside the cab but to me I wouldnt say its loud to enough to call a drone and outside it sounds awesome, loud enough that you know its there without people thinking you lost your muffler.... At higher rpms youll probably hear more engine noise inside the cab than exhuast and outside some may call it "airy" but i dont think thats neccessarily the best description, to me its still deeper its just not as resonate than at lower rpms. As far as performance, not much HP gains if any of course but there was in fact a very noticeable increase in gad mileage, about 2 mpg more from my calculations! Anyways hopes this helps and I wasnt exactly sure where you wanted me to post so I figured this worked.

well, thanks fourpointsix. Sounds kinda like I'd like the 40 series better than that, the super 40 sounds like it might be similar to a magnaflow. I can't imagine how that description of the sound would ever be considered too loud or even loud at all. Sounds like it would be like a 50 series sound or somethign, that quiet. But I dont' want to go w/ the 40 series based on your experience and others' experiences w/ it, and all the posts about the drone and stuff. But I'm even kinda scared now that the imco will be too loud, even though I know I'd love it, I just don't want to seem like an uncivilized redneck that hotrods all the time or something, so just out looking to show off. I'd prefer to keep the 'cool truck, perfect sound' kind of image. But believe me, I know I'd love the imco sound even if it is loud, guess I'm just starting to consider passengers and neighbors now....does that mean I'm getting old, I'm just 25?

Higdogg you're young! (Well, 6 years older than me , but still young! )
The IMCO 1-chamber is the way to go. It's loud but it's still refined. The only thing that would make you sound like a redneck on these trucks is A) Straight pipe or B) Glasspacks. Both those options are loud but raspy and cheap sounding. The IMCO (ESPECIALLY with tips!) is loud, deep, and smooth. It's the perfect truck sound. And it's cheaper and flows better than Flowmaster to boot. Even hammering it I'm getting 20 to 40 more miles out of a tank than I was with the Flowmaster. Also, the torque gains have been noticeable. The most obvious improvement occured while climbing hills. I climb the same grade a couple times a week. I go up this hill at 45 MPH. With the Flowmaster the truck always downshifted to 3rd out of OD to maintain 45 MPH. With the IMCO I stay in OD at 45 MPH uphill no problem. It may not seem like a big deal but it really excited me. So, I will end by encouraging you once again to get the IMCO!

I'll probably be getting the imco. Soon as I find some wheels I'm going to start ordering stuff, so hopefully really soon. Hey, I was reading in one of the posts somewhere on here that the '05's only have 2 cats on them. Man, if that's so, then we got screwed. I hate the fact that they actually put 4 cats on these trucks, that's dumb.

Yeah, my muffler shop was commenting that I only had 2 and I didn't believe them until I looked myself. Apparently they only did 4 in 2004. Not to worry though. A pair of high flow Magnaflow cats will do the trick and then some! I hear it makes the truck a lot louder. However, you won't need any more volume with the IMCO.

I probably won't be messing w/ the cats any time soon, that's one thing I'll let go for a long time since I'm going to get wheels and tires and stuff soon and spend more money than I want to spend. So if I get the imco then surely I won't need to get high flow cats for good sound. Maybe my 4 will keep it at the perfect sound level w/ the imco. Bet that's why yours sounds better than the dodge.

Yeah, now I have to get an XCal2 just so I won't be too far behind my neighbor's Dodge if he wants to race! This 4.6 won't fair well against the Hemi!

higdogg,
I have the experience of having had both the regular 40 Flowmaster and now the Super 40 Flowmaster. When I installed the regular 40 Flowmaster, it droned so bad I took it off and put on a Magnaflow SI/DO. I was just not happy with the sound, could hardly hear it.
I decided to go back to the Flowmaster and live with the drone but then saw they came out with the Super 40. I installed the Super 40 SI/DO and am very pleased. It has the same low tone and is just as loud as the regular 40. You can hear it most of the time and everyone comments on how nice it sounds. At about 50mph it quiets down and there is almost no drone at all. I tow a heavy trailer and if it was going to drone it would then. Again, I am very pleased.
Have fun.
