May be your EGR pipe. Have you tried to trace it from where you know it starts to where it ends up?

goes up towards the engine bay area, but i lose where it goes to. part way up theres a thing shaped like a spaceship on it that it goes through. I cut off my cats and its just hanging under there right now. Bringing it to the exhaust shop tomorrow to get true duals welded up. Wohoo, but id still like to know what that pipe is lol.

I haven't had the truck long, and haven't done much poking around at it; but if it's a smallish diameter pipe that comes into the exhaust in front of the cats it sure sounds like an EGR pipe to me. It's part of your emissions equipment.

its inbetween the 2 cats, because theres 2 pipes infront with an H in it with the o2 sensor, then the 2 pipes go into the front cat, a single pipe comes out, theres a metal pipe about 1" in diameter or so, then the other cat, then the rest of the exhaust. i was told i wouldnt get a service engine light for when i cut the cats off because the o2 sensor is infront of the cats. is this correct?

As long as you've still got an 02 sensor screwed into the pipe somewhere and still connected to the computer so it can send it's data, you can pretty much do whatever you want with the exhaust.

As for whether it's a good idea or not is subject for a different discussion.

that pipe is your air injection for the second cat and that space ship looking thing is a check valve.fords air injection comes from the back of the cylinder heads.
