No one believes I have dual cat. conv.!!

Been to 3 muffler shops wanting to run dual out of my dual cat. conv.

One shop said My truck doesn't have em'.

One said if it does the not legal and wont touch it.

Last one just basically ignored me about having dual cats and wanting true duals and pushed a 230.00 Flow-Master with dual outs.

When I argue the point they just stare at me and won't check for themselves.

Is a F150 with dual cats that uncommon??

Nope, you've just been finding idiots instead of real mechanics.

Four...

Hah!

Wait 'till you tell them that you actually have FOUR cats, and FOUR oxygen sensors ;-)).

Keep looking - you haven't found the right shop.

Exactly what I was thinking. It's not just dual cats, it's dual inline cats on each side of the engine, each with an O2 sensor. Seems like overkill to me... I wish I could replace all that extra hardware and run 2 (one on each side) high-flow cats with true dual exhaust. Damn government sticking their nose under our trucks. If only the cats would magically not be in working condition any more...

Well, if a hammer or other blunt instrument were to somehow bash on the pre-cats a bit until the substrate fell apart, you could then just empty them out so that it looks like you have the pre-cats. Then you could just swap the main cats with some Magnaflow high-flows and run true duals out the back with a crossover/X-pipe. And it would look totally stock, especially if you mount the Magnaflows upside-down so that the logo doesn't show.

If you did this you wouldn't even get a code, and you'd still run your O2 sensors.

Don't ask me how I know this is true. Perhaps a "friend of a friend of a friend" has done this or something

I'd love to do that exactly, but according to federal regulations it's illegal to perform any maintenance, replacement or repair on catalytic converters which are operating normally, so no "respectable" shop would be willing to perform this service at the risk of losing their licenses. And I don't have a welder. Stupid government regulations.

Maybe I'll start looking more toward Bithlo (where the Speedway is), but Midas and Tuffy both said they wouldn't touch working cats.

But if you bash them just a little bit until the internal substrate fell apart, then, well, they wouldn't be "working cats" any more. In fact, they'd be clogged cats that would require replacement - because you are a good citizen and all.

And since you don't want to spend over $1K on factory cats, then Magnaflow or other aftermarket high-flows are a good alternative

UCF..you cant go to a "chain" and have them worked on. you need to find a performance exhaust shop. those chains are just a rip off usually anyway. the quotes are usually twice the price they should be.

I agree wholeheartedly. That's why I always do my own work. But, while I do know how to weld, I don't own a welder, which makes this particular project impossible to do myself. And while chains are rip-offs at twice the price, at least you know you're getting a quality product. That's the risk with using another shop, unless you do it often enough to get a good rapport with a shop. Maybe I'll just spend the extra $200 that would have gone to labor and buy a cheap (used) MIG welder instead.
