getting a Magnaflow, do I need a tip?

I have decided on a Magnaflow to replace the stock muffler. It's a stainless steel, 2.5 in & out, 5x8x18. That's part #14246, 14256, or 14263 depending on the entrance/exit location.

So my next question is should I get some kind of a tip? Will this do anything or is it just there to look pretty? I'd just get it welded on to the stock 2.5" pipe.

I'm guessing it will just project the sound. Kind of like a megaphone effect, the bigger the bell the louder it projects or something like that. If it would make any difference, what size should I get? How long and what diameter?

Anyways I appreciate any help. Let me just say that this site is awesome! It is a very powerful tool that has answered alot of my questions and educated me enormously.
