True Dual exhaust system
True Dual exhaust system
Does anyone make an out-of-the-box kit for true dual (with two mufflers) or do I just need to purchase a couple of mufflers and head down to the local muffler shop to get the pipes put on? Thanks in advance.
Not dumb ! On most F-150s, the 2 headpipes merge into 1 single pipe. They join at a "Y-intersection". Y's can also split 1 exhaust pipe into 2 separate pipes, like when adding fake duals. "Y-Pipes" are generally aftermarket, universal, removable replacements. Here is an example:

So what would be better. #1-To split the pipes at the factory Y pipe and run two mufflers and then out the back. #2-Buy a muffler that is SI/DO and then out the back. #3-Buy a SI/SO and put aY pipe after that and out the back.
On a similar not which would retain the most backpressure, I have a 4.6 and need all the tourqe I can get.

#2 is what most of the pre-engineered cat-back's do. It's simple, effective, lighter, cheaper, and fewer parts. It also has less fitment issues and performs well on stock to mild trucks in the low to mid range rpms for maintaning your torque.
#3 needs a shorter muffler placed forward to leave room for the Y-Pipe. Personally, this would be my last choice.

Match the muffler inlet size to the single pipe coming from the Y pipe. This should be 2.5" on your truck. Then run 2" or 2.25" duals out the back. With the 2.5" pipe it is difficult to get the clearance around the spare tire. If you want a deeper sound, use a large 3.5 to 4" tip. I would ask for mandrel bent pipe.
I use a Y after the muffler to get the dual look on my truck. The muffler is a 3 SI/SO by Aero Turbine. But I did this just because I wanted the dual look and I wanted to use the Aero Turbine. The duals are 2.25" with 3" tips. It has a great deep sound when I'm on the gas and quite at cruise. Got it all done for $250.00. I do wish I had changed the front Y pipe with the magnaflow Y pipe and run 3" to the muffler.
