Question 1997 Exhaust Leak

I have a 1997 4.2 and it makes a rhythmic thumping sound. I was told by my mechanic that I have an exhaust leak. He doesn’t do work on exhaust systems but has referred me to someone that does.

Before I go I would like information. What causes an exhaust leak and how serious is it. Will it damage the engine not get it fixed? What are the risks involved if I wait a few months to fix it...it is Christmas after all.

Thanks. I did recently survive a heater core replacement....but I am not sure I could repair the exhaust.

If the exhaust leak is near the front of the vehicle, it increases the chance of exhaust fumes entering the cabin. That can be fatal.

Ask him where the exhaust leak is.

If it's in the exhaust manifold, get it fixed ASAP. If it's anywhere after the last catalytic converter, it's not too big of a deal.
