dump question
I don't want to spend too much money on a whole catback system. I was thinking of just spending my money on a borla turbo stainless muffler and dumping it. If i just replaced my muffler and dumped it after the rear axle, would I still be able to gain performance?

The Borla muffler will provide a nice improvement over the factory "garbage can", but how does the dump improve performance over a tail section?

I don't really know much about the borla, but I can tell you that with the Ravin muffler being dumped, it was too loud. The dumps came out about 12" from the muffler and it sounded great, but the interior cab noise was too much to bear. I ended up going back and having the tailpipes and tips added to it less than three days later.
If the borla is a low tone exhaust, the dumps would probably be fine, but if you want to stay away from the interior noise, go with tailpipes.

adamski is right, if you have the exhaust dumped it creates quite a bit of cabin noise in the truck but on the positive side it is not that loud on the outside of the truck. As for power benefits there really is no benefit between pipes and dumps except the sound.

Not to disagree with you or anything, but when I started with my Ravin dumped, I honestly believe that it was louder than having the tips run out the back. It was insanely loud actually. Some mufflers mught be different, but I know from my experience that mine was too loud when it was dumped, buth inside and outside the cab. It had a great sound, and I loved it, but it was too loud to run on a daily basis. I am considering adding some "Y" cutouts that would allow me to divert the exhaust from the tailpipes to a dump situation just by pulling a lever in the truck. It is kind of fun to watch people have to close their eyes when you start the truck because of all the dust that is blown out and around the truck!

As for a performance difference with the dumps and tailpipes, I feel that there is more back pressure added by using the tailpipes. In some situations by adding the exhaust you cut out all the factory back pressure, and the only way to regain some of it (for the tourque aspect) is to have the backpressure from the tailpipes. The dumps don't allow for any back pressure. I'm not a professional by any means, but I do know that the more free flow design muffler you use, the less back pressure you will have. This then creates a need for some back pressure to regain some of the lost torque.

adamski,
I have basied what I said on my personal experience. A few weeks ago I had full pipes comming out under my bumper with 3.5 echo tips, I had a roll pan installed and had my exhaust modified so that it dumped. This is where I say that it is no where as loud outside the truck as the full pipes. But the echo tips also added quite a bit of volume to the noise level. But on the other hand the cabin noise more than doubled, which is pretty annoying but I can live with it. The performance level of my truck has not even flinched, and I beleive you said yours dumped after the rear axel and mine dumps before the rear axel. But you also haft to look at another point between our trucks, you have the 5.4 V8 and I have the 4.2 V6 which by the way it looks both engines react very diffrently to dumps.

Hey F150Freak ...
Question ... what about exhaust fumes? Any problem with it? I want to do the same thing and dump my exhaust before the axle -- looks cleaner and I am going do the lowered or bagged & body drop thing down the road ... Asked an exhaust shop about it and they brought that fume thing up ... also know guys who have dumped their exhaust before the axle and they say no problem??? Anyone???

Mine was dumped nearly a foot infront of the rear axle. Not to argue a point to death, I know that my exhaust is louder now with the echo tips and all coming out the back. The difference for me was the interior "drone". With the dumps the interior noise was exactly as you said, annoying. I liked the sound, but the drone was too much for me, so I had the tailpipes added. I am sure there is a huge difference in the amount of exhaust flow and back pressure between the 5.4 and 4.6. And as you say, I have the 5.4 so I would expect it to be louder. I also know that the actual muffler makes a big difference. The Ravin is a free flow system, there is no baffling or anything to help add back pressure to the system other than the added tailpipes.
Atleast we both have had personal experiences with this to be able to compare the results.

When mine was dumped, the only "problem" I had was the incredible amount of dust the exhaust blew out from underneath the truck. If you had a long enough driveway, you could use the truck as a blower
. From my experience the exhaust fumes didn;t ever present a problem. Maybe in the older model trucks burning oil or running too rich, could there be a problem, but with htese newer trucks, the emissions are so strict that there really aren't any horriffic smells coming from the exhaust. There would be the carbon-dioxide in the exhaust, but I think that there are laws about the length of exhaust pipes for our safety. I know the guy that originally installed the dumps said that the actual end of the pipe must extend 18" beyond the back of the cab. I'm sure that this has something to do with keeping the exhaust fumes from affecting us in the cab? Just my uneducated guess!

Thanks for the info Adamski ...
Hmmm ... I wonder if there is enough room for an 18" dump pipe? actually the dumps would be turned downwards at near the end of the pipe so the exhaust couldn't really affect the cab ... i guess this exhaust shop wanted to sell the entire exhaust package ... something to think about ... I'll have mull over this some more and shop some more ...
