Question Thinking about true duals

My questions are:
Do you need two cats for this? Do our trucks have two cats? Does this give me more performance or more sound or both? Lastly, seeing that I have a v6, will this hinder my low end due to back pressure. Thank you once more everyone.

Hi split
I would be willing to bet you have two resonators and 2 cats already. this usually means two also have two O2 sensors. You would be good to go for true duels. But, I have heard that this may not be the best thing for your engine in terms of power output.
Hopefully someone with your type of setup will help you better.

Yes, you do have 2 cats and two precats. You back pressure?I am not sure about this.If you leave the pipe size down(2 1/4 or 2 1/2) it should be ok. Don't qote me on this though as I am not an exhaust expert. When I do mine, I am keeping stock exhaust size(single in single out).Any power that is lost on the low end will be made up for in the top end(high rpms).Too bad we need more power down low.I am hoping to gain alittle down there by keeping the stock size.My local shop says don't expect over 10 hp.I am thinking its 10 more hp than before.Hope this helps

Question

Well I just looked under my truck, which I don't think I have done ever. oh, well now I know what is going on I do have cats, and they both merge into one pipe. Is this the infamous "y-pipe? everyone is talking about? Out of curiosity, where would this so called "h-pipe" or "balance pipe" go? Would I need this for true duals? Lastly, where would my second pipe go, it seems like my gas tank would get in the way? Thanks

Split,
Yes you must have seen the infamous “Y” pipe. The equalizer pipe or “H” pipe should connect just prior to the intake of your new mufflers. Some other problems you might encounter, Cutting at the “Y” pipe you must be careful of your O2 sensor that is mounted there. Also you must measure carefully that you can fit two mufflers in the place of where you currently have one. Some special piping is necessary. You can have them “mufflers hang downward “easiest” or do what I had done which is to have them mounted staggered on there sides “FLAT” (most ground clearance). With piping going around each other muffler. (kinda hard to explain)
As far as power, I did gain low end Torque and HP but most of all when I hit about 2.5k it feels like a turbo kicking in. (it just Launches). This is where my serious power band starts.

Hey LaserNAV, thanks so much for all the info. I am a little confused still about how to mount them so they fit. At least I'm stoked now that I can increase power at 2500 rpms. I like to hear that. Also, do you know where I can get mandrel-bent pipes? If I am going to do it, I want to do it right. Thanks again

Split,
I had my systems done at my local performance shop.
I don’t know where to get mandrel-bent pipes.

Ill try and explain how to set up the mufflers to make them fit. Staggered (one in front of the other) Horizontally (mufflers flat with Underbody) is how I have them. The other way would be to stagger them (one in front of the other) Vertically (Mufflers hang down) .

Horizontally is much tougher to mount (do to pipe runs around the other muffler) ( very little room between pipe, muffler and heat shield) You will see if you measure, It can be done.
