I've got a 2000 4x2 with the 4.6 V-8. Added a catback with the Flowmaster 50 series last week. Sounds great to me! Nice deep, throaty rumble at idle... sounds off nicely when I get on it and not too bad at all at freeway speeds. I don't think you could go wrong with either the 40 or 50 series

I also swapped out the stock air filter for a K&N FIPK this weekend and it even seems to sound a little better... I know it's sure breathing better and much more reponsive to the gas!

i might start a big debate here, but, here goes..ike, have you listened to a ford with straight pipes? we all run these in tennessee, well, most of us. i listened to several trucks with different exhaust set-ups, and the straight pipes aren't much louder than the 40's you're considering, and where i live much cheaper. did my 99 4.6 for $170 including 24" tips, sounds and looks great. my truck has 2 cats on each side coming off the manifolds and, trust me, they eat a lot of sound. by the way, i haven't noticed any loss of low end, only a gain in top end. just my thoughts, good luck, Rich.

Just beforeI put my Flowmaster kit on, I started the truck up after the factory muffler and tailpipe were removed, just for fun. I was in a large enclosed garage and expected to have my ears blown, but it actually didn't sound too loud or too bad. I believe you are exactly right about the 4 factory cats muffling the sound conciderably. Don't know how this would sound in the cab on long trips, but was more concerned with losing too much backpressure. Did any of the trucks you know with straight pipes trip the "check engine light" after the mod?

Thumbs up

Got the 40 and I love it! It's a perfect balance for getting loud on Friday night, and still quiet enough to drive to church on Sunday.

yes, i have heard of the "check engine" light coming on, by a buddy of mine i suggested the straight pipes to. i told him the disconnecting the battery and turning on the lights trick, he did this and has had no more problems. i think mine probably would have also, but i did the airbox mod i read about on here the day after the pipes and thought i should disconnect and let the computer reset. as of today, roughly 6 months after the mods, i have had no problems at all. happy wheelin, Rich

I am ready to get a 40 series Flowmaster muffler. I want a single exit behind the rear wheel, just like the Gibson cat-back kit I have now. Does Flowmaster make a kit for this or should I just get a muffler shop to do it?

Thanks

A couple of weeks ago, I swapped the 50 that came with the cat-back kit for a 40 delta flow. Please check out the original post here for the whole story:

Hope this helps a few make a decision.

Mike 150:
Sorry, but a guy in Tennessee E-mailed me first from my original post, and I sold him my 50 series.

The Delta flow is newer, but has been around for a little while. Basically, they add two smaller V-shaped baffles that tuck inside the bigger one that's already part of the 40 series. You can go to www.flowmastermufflers.com for more.

As far as the cost and install goes, I don't know since I bought the cat back kit with the 50, then swapped out the muffler with the 40 delta (supplied free by Flowmaster). All the labor was my own.
