Which 50 series was it? The 50 series SUV muffler is used in Flowmaster's dual outlet rear kit, and I've heard good things about it. One of the big selling points is low interior resonance. Sorry things didn't turn out the way you wanted it.

2000 XLT Black Sport, Flareside, 2WD, Ext. Cab, 5.4L Auto. Other factory options: 3.55 LS, Class III tow, 6-way Captains chairs w/CD changer, Remote entry , and Slider window.
Mods: Undercoat, window tint, headlight & tail light covers, removed "Sport" decals, upgraded Triton tailgate emblem, Linex spray-in bedliner, and an ARE LSII lid.
Wish list: Flowmaster duals, K&N FIPK, and a Belltech 3/4 drop.

It was the standard single in / single out 50 series (not the SUV or Delta). The strange thing is the resonance was nearly nonexistent at all speeds other than 60-70 mph speed. I'm sure it might have been tolerable/desirable to some. However, for me it was just an irritating drone/roar. I guess it's tough to have a free-flowing and "quiet" exhaust at the same time. Uh-Oh, there might have been a Gibson subscriber listening...

Unhappy Flowmaster Drone was too loud...

Well, I installed the 50 series (muffler only) a few weeks ago for the sole purpose of improving my milage. A little louder would be OK but not "wake the neighbors" louder. I was told by a few people that doing the muffler only would not be that much louder than stock. Mainly louder accelerating only. Unfortunately, I didn't see enough improvement in the milage (maybe .5 to 1 mpg at most) to justify the resonating drone at the 60 - 70 mph speed. I did like the sound when reving the engine and taking off, but when cruising, the drone was enough to get annoying in a hurry. Needless to say, I went back with the stock muffler and I'm now enjoying listening to the radio again on the way to work in the mornings. Hey, loud is OK (I'm not that old yet). It just wasn't my goal this time.

Should have gone with the 70 series, almost as quite as stock except under load. No drone at cruise and it did make slight improvement in performance. See if they will make a trade.....

Cool

Do you still have the flowmaster? Do you want to unload it at a reasonable price?

damorris,

You hit the nail right on the head. Free flow = noise. That's something we all need to let each other know. And yes I am a Gibson guy! Super Truck at that. And yes it is noisy. I like it but, when they ask, I tell everyone that it is so. If you want the same noise level as the stock, stay with the stock! Put your money on something else. The designers knew what they were doing when they designed the quite one for production. Thanks for sharing your experience. Someone will benifit from it.

98Sleeper,
Actually, it's still at the muffler shop welded to the pipe assembly from the cat back. The muffler guy said he was always getting f-150s coming through and could probably sell the whole thing for $50-$65. I paid $90 for the muffler locally. When I went back to get my old one put back on, he had the full cat-back assembly that he had just taken off of a new 2000 F-150 that he simply welded back up to mine (to keep from having so many joints in the exhaust. Thanks for the interest though.

A great solution for loud exhaust is Mud Terrain tires, then you don't have to worry about hearing droning at high speeds.
