Question How do I tell what exhaust system I have?

I don’t want to sound completely ignorant (I guess I am though).

I bought my truck used (yes, over a new one). It had dual exhaust on it. It sounds real nice and I would like to find out what it is so that I can have something to compare it with. It is starting to rust and I’m thinking of replacing it.

I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanx,
Husker Truck

If the mufflers don't have the name on them, chances are it has just crap mufflers. If it's rusting, even a better chance, good pipe is SS or aluminized.

First determine if it is true dual or a cat-back. A true dual will have two separate systems from the manifold/header all the way to the tailpipe. The pipes never interact. A cat-back will go into one pipe right after the two catalytic converters into one big muffler (somewhere around 8"dia/18"long) that has two outputs from it and then dual pipes out the end or just in front of the two rear tires. The phrase "cat-back" is a slang term for "from the catalytic converters back to the tail pipe". Cat-backs are emmision legal but a lot duals are not. Few shops will work on an exhuast system that is not legal. There is no good way to tell what kind of muffler is on unless it is stamped (doutbful, cost prohibitive) and if it is rusting the insides are probally wasted and will sound different than a new one anyway. If you have a cat-back I say go with a gibson. Not loud but it has subtle throatty grumble that won't get you pulled over when lay on the throttle. If you have a true duals, flowmaster is a popular one. good luck
