Question Flowmaster cat backs

These are questions to who ever has a Flowmaster exhaust. How do you like it? If you have dual rear exit, did you have any problem installing it, like spare tire in the way. Any other comments on that type of system are highly appreciated. It is going on a 99 Supercab Flareside 4x4 5.4 automatic.

Chevy Suck,

Well if your truck is deep wedgewood blue we have the exact same thing. I had a 3 chamber flowmaster w/3" alu. tube put an about 2 months ago. I'm happy with it. It's very calm when just cruzin' but really kicks in and gets throaty about 2500 rpm. I can't give advice on installation because I had it done but watched and looked easy if I had a torch. Oh ya, I kept the factory exit behind the back tire (just personal preference).
I just wish I had gone with something louder now.

Loser 1, thank you. Do you know what series of muffler that is? I plan to get a 50 series flowmaster. Did you just get a muffler or is it a catback. I called Flowmaster and they said they didn't have a single exit just like the factory. By the way, you have the exact same truck as me but mine is Island Blue, it is a 2000 color and have the ORP.

Nice Rig!!!!! I'm in So. Cal. and went to a local street rod shop. I know what you mean by Flowmaster series mufflers, mine is just a 3 chamber (sorry I can't be more help). The guy also custom bent my 3" catback tube. I paid close to $300 for muffler, pipe and labor. After checking around I found this was a competitive $. Again nice sound and noticeable power!!! (The guy told me ~15-20hp^. Also pop in a K&N air filter for $50.

Cool

Chevy Suck,

I have a 40 series cat back system on my truck and I have to tell you that at first I thought that it was too loud. However; now I'm crazy about the sound. I guess I had to get used to all that rumbling coming out of the back. My 40s has single in and duals out the back w/ 3" tips. It sure makes heads turn when I get a case of gorilla foot.

JJHarris,

I will agree with you and say I wish I had gone with something a little more head turning. But then again some times it just gives "The Man" a reason to "Light You Up".

I just got flowmaster exhaust done to my truck. It is a supercab 4x4, 5.4L with the ORP. I went to a local muffler shop specializing in custom exhaust. They installed stainless tubing from the cat back, with dual outlets on either side of the hitch. I had the 2 chamber 40 series flowmaster put on. Let me tell you, it is damn throaty and loud. I love it. Also put huge 3.5 inch slashcut tips on it. The system is so awesome. Looks even better with the "blue oval" hitch cover in between the tips.

Thumbs up

Thanks everyone for all of your help!

Z71Killer,

You didn't have to relocate your spare tire did you? Right now, that is my main concern, I don't want to have to carry my spare in the back.

Chevy S: Are you planning on doing the install yourself?? I found it to be way cheaper to find a local muffler shop. Ended up with Minikie Muffler. They had a guy that was trained in steel pipe bending and it took him about an hour to remove and install my cat-back. Mine is a single 2 1/2" steel pipe out, and I located it in it's original position, in front of rear tire. They told me it would run about $100 more for duels out the rear. Total: muffler, pipe and install:$116 They also sell muffler tips but were out when I was there, I need to go back and have one put on. If you read "best sounding muffler" you will see a lot of post by me about it's sound

Chevy Suck, first of all, I love the name. As for the flowmaster, I'm going to have to agree with Tina again. I have the 40 series 2 chamber with a single in/dual out the rear. I found my system on the internet from a muffler shop in florida. I got prebent aluminum 2 1/4" pipe, the flowmaster and 2 4" 2 foot long chrome slash cut tips. It looks and sounds absolutely incredible. I get constant comments on it everywhere I go. So many people say "I want to do the same thing, it's perfect" and it is...not too loud, definitely not too quiet. It's nothing like a 302 or 351 with dual flowmasters but it's not bad at all. I wish I could get a 302 or a 351 for that simple purpose of more noise, but I'll live. I love it. My spare is still where it's supposed to be. The only problems I have are that occasionally the big chome tips bang off of the trailer hitch. It's only occasionally and I think had I had someone more experienced do it, I wouldn't have this problem. Go for the 40 series, you'll be happy you did!

Mike

Chevy Suck,

Like everyone else I too like the name. I bought the Flowmaster Delta series cat-back dual outlet system from Summit. It is easy to do if you have any mechanical skill. The duals go on the outside of the frame and your spare will be fine. If you do this yourself you will want to remove the spare while installing for easier access. However, I would reccomend going to a local shop and having them install the flowmaster and bending their own pipe. This system cost me $300, plus I bought 3" chrome tips and had them welded on. Final cost about $375. I think a local shop could easily do it for under $200. I learned my lesson, I will do that if I ever need another system.
Also if you do it yourself make sure when you cut the old muffler off to cut it right at the weld or else the pipe from the cat will be to short. You will love the sound though!

Thanks for all of your help! I got a Flowmaster 40 series with dual out the rear put on yesterday and I LOVE it. It is exactly how I wanted it to sound, just wish it was a little louder when at idle, but I can live with it. Had a muffler shop do it and put 3.5" stainless tips for $395. They did an excellent job. Again, thanks.

Hey DU302, was that company you got your kit from called New Era Exhaust? I ordered that same kit from them about a week ago - the flowmaster 40, prebent dual pipes and two tips. Did you put it on yourself? How was the installation? If not, how much did it cose to have it put on? Did you encounter any problems?

Anyone else interested in this kit, can find it at http://www.neweraexhaust.com They have it under "monthly specials" and they also have alot of other cool stuff, with cheap flowmasters and nice tips and tubing.

DU302,

Hey, I have been trying to get hold of New Era, but have had no luck, maybe you can help?
Is your low end power better with the 2 1/4" or with the 2 1/2" pipes. I want to get the 2 1/2" pipes but they won't answer my emails. What's up with them? Did you have any problems with them? I'm trying to get a price and shipping up to Alaska and was wondering what the shipping was for you. They sound like a good deal for a catback system. Did they do a good job on the bend in the pipes or are they all bent up every which way? Up here in Alaska, there aren't too many good exhaust shops and was wondering if the exhaust was as good as the price. Can anyone else give me some info on their experience with New Era Exhaust Systems?

Thanks

Todd,

Well it's been about a week and a half now, and they said it would be here in a week. Not here yet. Also, I had a bit of a bad experiece with them on the phone trying to order. It seemed like I was bothering the guy on the other end, like he had something else going on. I don't think they sounded too professional. I just want my exhause already! That's pretty much all I have to say
about them until I get the kit, then I'll have an update.
