Jim,

Please keep us posted, I was just about to start asking about these headers so I'm almost as excited about your delivery as you are!

Please let me know how involved the installation is, as far as time and what all needs to be removed, or just moved out the way.

Thanks

Red face

Dave, Spyder,
Whew! Finally got em on. Would you believe a day and a half! The old manifolds came off easy enough but putting the headers on was very tough for me. I have the 5.4 and 4 wheel drive and my setup seems a little different from the 4.6 according to your pictures, Dave. I got the drivers side header in place easy enough but trying to get all the bolts in was a nightmare. I spent hours on the the two top rear bolts in particular. there is simply no room for a mans' hand to get even close to starting the thread. Finally, my wife actually got the two bolts started. Also with these two there is no way to get a socket on them. I had to slowly tighten with a box end wrench at about 1/8th turn at a time. END OF DAY ONE!

The passenger side went much easier. again the old manifold came off very easy. getting the header in place was a little tougher on this side. I had to move some things out of the way (unbolt bracket with some hoses attached) then try several different ways to wrestle the header in place. Finally got it in. only one problem bolt on this side (bottom rear) but with my hand and arm jammed in between the small space between the starter and frame, and my wife working from the top (wheelwell) we got it in. Torqing all the bolts with various extentiond and swivel adaptors and a small 1/2 in wrench was difficult but doable. I disconnected the egr tube from the top but it was still very hard to get it threaded into the header. with a lot of wiggling I gradually threaded it in. almost no room to get a 1 1/4 wrench on it to tighten, but I managed to eek it down tight. BTW Dave I had no problem with the dipstick tube, popped right out and slid back in after.

I cranked it up and let it run for about ten minutes, no leaks. (whew!) Re tightened all bolts, put fender liners back on, wheels, and she hit the ground after about 16 hours!

I couldn't have done this without my wife's
help. What a gal! Not only did she physically get in there and get dirty with me, but when things were going bad she would come out with a beer and make me take a break and cool down. She was encouraging and patient with me. I'm not sure many wives would be so understanding.

I hope I didn't scare you Spyder. I think the 4.6 install may be easier. Hook up with DaveR and get his installation instructions/pictures.

Jim

Well any increase in power? Or loss in torque? I'm sure it sounds great! Overall bang for the buck quotient 1-10?

Guys, I was wondering if you ran into any problems removing the studs from the heads? I am gearing up to install headers on my truck and don't want any problems with studs stripping the holes in the aluminum heads. Thanks!

V10, Studs came right out, some even came out with the nuts. Have to be careful tightening up the bolts though, I had a feeling it wouldn't be hard to strip if you got carried away tightening them down.

Jim, glad you got 'em on, bummer about the problems you had. I have to admit I've not even seen a 5.4 so I'm not sure how different they are from the 4.6. So what is your verdict?

As for bang for the buck? I am very happy with mine, no loss in power, definate gain. They are more expensive than other mods though, that may tend to drop the B-B ratio. I'd probably say 7. This is only the second mod the other being the chip. So I really don't have much to compare with (yet).

Hi Guys,
Sorry about not getting back sooner...10 hour work days and another 2 hours commuting leaves me little time during the week for much else.

As for removing the old manifold studs, that is the easiest part of the whole deal! And, yes I was careful with the new header bolts.

As for performance, I,m very happy with the results. Yes, this is one of the more expensive mods but worth it to me. Keeping in mind that I have a 4X4, I was looking for more power, not necessarily speed. Also better gas milage. The power seems to be there...we'll soon see about the gas milage!

Jim Mc,

Congratulations on getting those headers in. I plan to do the mod myself someday. How do you like the sound of your Gibson Sport
Truck? Is it much louder than stock?

I put the ford motorsport headers on my4.6 Nastruck and here is a suggestion: Leave the factory studs in place! Then go out and by an extra set of nuts to double nut the headers in place. Saves time and you don't have to worry about misthreads!!!!!

cruzer,
Sport truck muff has same muff as super truck. The only diff is two pipes exit behind rear tire. Sound is mabey 25% louder than stock. I would like it a little louder but it's OK. I may in the future just get a Flowmaster 40 series muff and swap out the gibson muff just to see diff. Supertruck may be a little louder just because of shorter pipes.
