High Flow Cats ????
Does anyone make high flow catlytic converters for trucks ? Are the factory cats very restrictive ? I know that on mustangs,
a catback or headers offer no hp gains with stock cats.
Thanks in advance

WN,
I wondered that myself. The guy that did my exhaust sells them but I forgot to ask. I'll stay tuned to see what others think. I do know that removing the cat definitely makes the sound louder.

Removing the cat also leaves you open to Federal charges!

There are companies that make these high flow catalytic convertors for trucks. I cannot think of one at this time. The reason you don't see any gain in a Mustang with a high flow cat but stock exhaust is that the other parts of the system still tend to impede flow. Hence, there are all these cat back kits which open the exhaust after the cat to give more power. The downside is that too much of an opening will lower your torque, that thing that makes you go fast from a stop.
Cats cannot be removed by any mechanic until 50,000 miles had been passed OR there is something wrong with the cat. Even at 50k most places are hesitant to tamper with air quality parts. However, as one mechaninc once told me, running over rocks and damaging the cat is a good way of getting a new one.
If you are going to change the cat, consider the other parts as well. No sense in changin one part but having another restricted.
