Post An exhaust system for my V6

I have had my '97 F-150 for about 3 months and I was wondering what would be the best exhaust sytem that would do justice to the V6. My father told me that my 4.2L V6 did not deserve an exhaust system and I would just be wasting my money. Any suggestions???

I have a 99 F-150 with the V-6. It's stock exhaust sounds pretty good. I think it would be well worth a good system. It's not going to sound like a big V-8 but it will souond good.

Exhaust isn't just for sound any more. Adding exhaust to your V6 will not only give you a deeper sound but it will also allow you engine to breath a bit better which will in turn give you a bit more horsepower. You will not see as much of a benefit as a V8 but you will see some improvement.

Avalanche, I have a 99 V6 and I just replaced my factory muffler with a Flowmaster. It sounds good and was only $95.00 - I didn't notice much power increase.

Darin, which Flowmaster did you get? How loud is it? I'm looking for a low growl, but now loud on the inside.

Cool

I had custom true duals put on last year. Not to knock you dad or anything, but those who say exhaust mods on a particular engine won't do anything really don't know what their talking about. You just have to decide what you're looking for, appearance, sound, or performance. Most systems that lower backpressure will increase high-end power, while making the bottom end feel not as strong. I'll use my system for example because I know what is did for performance. I had the muffler guy cut off the "Y" and install 2-2" pipes and 2 mufflers, size of tubing will also greatly effect the outcome. Bottom end suffered a bit, but it really opened up the power above 3K rpm. I don't regret doing it at all, but the drone on long highway trips does become tiresome. Something to think about...

Noles, It's a 2 chamber Flowmaster and it is like you want a little growl and not to much noise inside the truck (no drone).

Thumbs up

I put a rhino performance muffler put on.It has a very good throaty sound at idle and during acceleration.Once up to speed it quiets out.Windows up with air no drone until about 75-80.Windows down you can hear it sounds deep and throaty for a v-6.Had a magna flow but was too droanny in the cab for me.Claims to flow better than flowmaster and dynomax.

Question

i know some of you don't like glasspacks but i like the glasspack that's behind my v6. and after growing up with loud ford diesels and a 302 w/ two 11 year old glasspacks i don't mind a little cabin noise.
but the only question i have is for SlickSTX-
who did you get to put true duals on your v6? i called several muffler shops asking for true duals and they all said it can't be done on my truck, they all suggested a glasspack (while dad wanted a flowmaster). and i'm still asking after the glasspack has been on for 2 years. i still like the glasspack but i find the chrome tips to be a pain in the butt since they have decided to take to an early rusting.

to tell you the truth i'm not sure what a glasspack is either and i'm not sure how to describe it but here's how the Jeg's catalog describes a glasspack: tubular design w/ fiberglass packing that resist high temps and provides for better flow, boosts hp by decreasing backpressure. what i do know is that they are louder and last longer than the average muffler.

ponysix,
I live in north Texas, but any muffler shop can do the same thing I did. The people who told you it couldn't be done don't know what they are talking about...stay away from them. I was told the same thing a first. The V6 is set up just the same as the 8's as far as the exhaust. Get under the truck and look. After the manifolds there are two cats on each side followed by a "Y" shaped connector pipe. Have them cut off everything after the cats, and install two new mufflers and pipes from there back. This couldn't be done as easily on the previous model fords and chev$%^&s, because they "Y'ed" into a 2 in 1 out catilitic converter.

One thing I forgot...my system goes parallel down the passenger side. Some **** people may not call this "true duals" because the two sides are not equal length, but I really don't see how that slight difference would make a difference in this application.

Talking

Hey slickstx, I also live in Arlington, Texas. What a small world huh? But as of right now I'm In Oklahoma visiting my girlfriend (ponysix8). Where are you a student at? So far there are 3 people on here that live in Arlington, that's pretty cool. Maybe we should all get together and show off our trucks.
