Question Snap, Crackle, Pop!

After stopping and turning off the engine ('98 4.6L) I hear constant snap, crackle, and popping as the exhaust system cools and contracts. It sounds like it's in the cats and forward. Has anyone had this and eliminated or reduced the noise? I don't think it's affecting anything adversely, but is a little annoying and something of a head turner for the wrong reasons!

Thanks,
David A.

GOT MILK??? to go w/snap-crackle-pop
Seriously it sounds like it's just your truck cooling down. I have a couple of kids in the back seat yelling so I never notice those noises

Thanks, Tina - Figured it was "normal" for the truck. It just sounds a little tacky! I have three kids who, when I stop and turn off the engine, until they disappear in a cloud of bickering, laughter, and dust, mask the noise, too!

The guy at my local muffler shop told me that stainless steel will make alot of popping noise when cooling down. Maybe they use stainless steel in the exhaust system.

You guys should hear a V10 when it's new. It sounds like a hundred guys shooting BB guns inside a tin can....Thank goodness it stopped.

After you get some miles on it the snap noise will stop.

I've got 15k on mine and it still does that while cooling down... Doesn't bother me though.

My truck did that really bad even when it was running. It has finally almost completely stopped after two months and 2000 miles. I think it is condensation in the catalytic converters and the stainless steel developing a memory.
