Post I need help quick. 4.2L V6 Exhaust.

I'm getting this done soon so I need some quick advice. I have heard many different opinions, encluding, don't mess with the factory exhaust. Do I want to go with a
2 1/2" in / out Flowmaster 2 chamber and leave the rest of the pipes stock? Do I want to go with something other than a Flowmaster? Do I want to go with chrome tips? I'm looking for better sound out of my V6 but not too load. Not too worried about performance or looks. Thanks. -AR

Remember, it's a 4.2L V6 in a 99' F-150 4X4.

I've got a V8 so I can't help much. I do have a 2 chambered 40series Flowmaster cat-back exiting in front of the rear tire. It's loud with deep rumbling sounds. I don't know how it would sound on yours, weaker??? Mine is a 2 1/2" single out and yes I could really feel the hp when I first added it. It sure is a much smaller muffer than that bomb that came off the truck!! This route I took was a whole lot cheaper than most other muffers and I figured if I didn't like it, I wouldn't be out to much $!!! Mine did wind up being exactly what I was looking for

Cool

I put a Rhino muffler on mine.It has a deep rumble at idle like a flowmaster but quieter because its a six.At acceleration nice throaty sound and nice inhale sound on shifts.Once at dsired speed really gets quiet almost stock quiet with the windows up and the air on but with the windows down you can hear a nice throaty exahuast sound.Claims to flow better than flowmaster and dynomax and give more hp but i didnt notice that much.Had a magnaflow but was to dronny at all speeds for me.Does get a little louder on dornes a little about 75-85 mph but other wise its smooth sounding for the sixes.

Thumbs up

I've got a V6 with a 3-chamber 50-series and it sounds pretty good. I didn't just replace the muffler, though. I removed all the pipe behind the muffler and put a turn-down after the muffler. Nice sound at idle and normal acceleration, about as quiet as stock at cruise. If you're going to use a 2-chamber (40-series?) and keep the tail pipe, it probably won't be any louder than mine. And you definitely want to stay with 2 1/2" pipe, it's the right size for a 4.2L engine. I know you aren't interested in a performance increase, but I bet you'll notice a difference.

Question

gaudenti and mike150

What exactly is an air box mod? The complete K&N system/AIR Aid system. Did you pull out the stock air filter apart?

peterjan, Look on the F150online home page.On the bars look under tech articles. There is a cheap modification to the stock airbox that gets similar results as airraid and k&n .Also some pictures to see what it looks like.Works fairly well.Good luck ,mike150.

Hey Mike150,
how much did you pay for that Rhino muffler? Did you install it yourself?

Noles Paid about 70.00 and had it installed 100.00 total. You can find ads in truckin mag. to see comparisons to flowmaster and dynomax.
