2 Cats or one?

I have a 92' F150 4.9 and i'm in need of a new exhaust system. My question is, I currently have 2 cats, at least they look like cats and 1 muffler, do I have to keep both cats to stay emmission legal, or can I go to one? (oh yah, I live in California)

Or, does anyone have a better suggestion on what I should run. I'm looking more to keep it stock then high performance (196,000 miles). Thanks

My last truck was a 91 with a 4.9 straight six. I cut one cat and put on a glass pack along with an air intake and chip. I live in NJ and had no problem passing the smog test.
