Rear Exit or Side Exit Exhaust?

I currently have a custom exhaust with a SI/DO Magnaflow muffler that exits straight out the back. I am planning on getting a new exhaust with a Flowmaster SI/DO muffler and bigger tips. I was wondering what you all thought looks the best: Rear Exit or Side Exit? I like the way it looks out the back but I haven't seen the side exit on a Ford, only a few Chevys. Any input and/or pictures would be appreciated.

Chris

I think that's up to your personal taste. However, I used to have a 2000 supercab 5.4 4x4, and I was really dissapointed with the sound of the flowmaster. (I like it loud)

I think that the rear-exit looks best.

AMP-

Did you keep the Flowmaster on your truck or did you change it out? I had an Escape with a 3.0L V6 and I went from a Magnaflow to a Flowmaster on it as well. It made a big difference. If the difference on the F150 turns out anything like the difference on the Escape I think I will be happy.

By the way, when I said side exit what I meant was the pipe coming out at the back corner of the truck at an angle, not in front of the tires.

Thumbs up

Hey 01GreenMachine

I put the Flowmaster catback kit #17226 SI/DO on my Supercrew. $305 at Summit Racing. The 3" SS tips exit almost right at the corners of the bed. I can tell you I have received many compliments on how it looks. If you have any type of trailer or bumper mounted bike rack, out the side is the best way to go. I'll try to post some pics of the rear.

I'm also looking at the Force II #17226 also. However, I don't care too much for the semi-side exit. I'd rather have a true side exit behind the rear wheels. Their tech rep said they don't make them that way. However, yesterday I sent an email back to Flowmaster on their customer feedback line suggesting just this.
Take the 16319 and 16320 tips and continue bending them to a true 90 degree bend. They would then be true side exits (behind the rear wheels) vs exiting at the corners.
Their feedback link implied they are always open to new ideas, not that this is new. Hope to hear something back this week.

We'll see.....John

I would not reccomend side or angled exit chrome tips to anyone living in the northern states. Sand chips the chrome which leads to rust. Straight out looks better and has more endorsements.

I would use stainless tips and rear exit.

Florida, that looks pretty good! What kind of tips and/or system do you have on there?

For those of you that have the Flowmaster cat back systems installed on 4x4's, do you have to remove the spare tire? I have the off-road package with 17inch wheels also. I want the dual exhaust but do not want to remove my spare. Are there any other systems that do not require you to remove the spare if you must with the flowmaster? Thanks

Well heres a pic of mine finally switched to the side. I had it out the back with chrome tips but the weather finally ate the edges off them(rust). I wanted something different so my muffler shop played a little a we came up with this. Its stainless tips that dump out the side right before the edge of the bumper. The tips were angled to follow the lines of the body. Not sure I really like it this way but it will keep the exhaust off the trailers now . Its starting to grow on me a little though the more I see it. Other plus is there isnt another F150 in town I have seen with exhaust set up this way. I still kept the duals with the flowmaster delta 50 muffler and just switched the rear pipes/tips. Doesnt even come close to the spare on the sides anymore so no more possible heat issues there. Down side on side angled exit is they will catch more road debris which hopefully the mud flaps will cut down a little.

Your tips look like chrome again. How well do they hold up in NC
would I be better with stainless?
