Question Side Exit In Front of Tire

I am going to be putting a Flowmaster 40 on my '01 Screw 5.4 and I am wondering about the side exit in front of the tire. Any advantages/disadvantages? I like the way that they look but dont want to do anything that is going to rob me of that o-so-great low end torque.

Take a look at your rear drums sometime I bet the side with the exhaust in front of it looks like hell compared to the other

It turns the center cap cover Green and the rim gets covered with exhaust all the time. Nice for boat launching. I had mine changed to a 98 exhaust under warrenty.

I seriously doubt the brake drum issue, and the green center cap is a rarity. You'll be fine if you decide to do it.

answer to question

I have the exhaust exiting in front of my rear tire, and have had no problems. I have a Flowmaster 40 series and it looks and sounds great. As far as that green center-cap problem... I haven't seen it yet and my exhaust has been on for a little over 6 months. Good Luck with the exhaust.

I went from the side exit to duel rear. The side exit is louder. When I had the side exit (stock on 1997 F-150) I never had a problem with discoloration of the wheel. I also had a Flowmaster original 40 and it did drone quite a bit at highway speeds on the 4.6L. I recommend the Super 40. Good tone with less drone and it should be plenty loud with that 5.4L...

I like the slash cuts, dualed, turned sideways and flush with each other like on the L and HD.

My 97 Had the Side exit and the exhaust pitted all 5 rims. They were replaced under warranty but I opted to keep the side exhaust. My 00 has the Borla transplanted from the 97 and the caps are starting to tarnish but the rims are OK. The 97 had the ORP rims that were coated. My 00 has the 16 inch polished aluminum rims. They are fine. it must be that the rims are cleaned often. The 97 rims were cleaned as often but the plastic coating pitted from the exhaust and it was difficult to clean properly where the pitting occured. A coat of wax will also help keep them clean. FWIW the L's have side exit.
