side exit and wheel discoloration

i am wanting to run side exit in front of rear tire. but i have heard of peoples wheels turning green from the heat. I have stock 17" wheels. and i was wondering if anyone with stock wheels has had this problem? i wonder if it is just the plastic centercap that turns green? because i havn't heard of anyone with solid wheels that turns green. so if anyone is having this problem will you let me know. and also can i see your pipes? thanks

i think it happens with the aluminum rims, and only if you dont keep them clean. if you wash your truck fairly often, you shouldnt have a problem.

03stx,

It is true and it isn't from the heat, it is from the gasses that are comming out of the exhaust that will adhear with aluminum uncoated rims. Mine has done this and once it turns warmer that pipe is outta here. Actually in late 1997 they recalled the f-150 to move the side exhaust to the rear of the tire.

Hope this helps,

Phil

i was wondering about how much do you think it will cost me to get my flowmaster installed with side exit in front or reat tire with 3.5"x18" tips? I already have the muffler, I just need the pipe ran and the tip. plus whatever labor will cost me. just trying to get an idea if anyone has an opinion.

I didn't think they actually had a recall about it, I knew that's why they moved the exhaust on a 98, though.

Nope to the discoloration. I've only heard of problems where it snows.

we have a 97 Lariat with the stock side exhaust and no problems whatsoever.

I've got a flowmaster 50 series and dual stainless steel tips out the side. I've been through two wheels!!!! but not cuz of the ehxuast. The factory ones stayed perfect through the entire time I've had the exhaust, and when I put on the 02 L wheels they have stayed good. Just keep them clean and you wont have a problem.

I have a '97 and put a Gibson Supertruck exhaust with dual tips in the stock location. 7 years later and I have not had one problem and there is no noticeable difference between the right rear and the other tires or wheels (stock aluminum 16"). I have the 50-state model, I don't know if that would make much of a difference.

FYI: They moved the exhaust to behind the wheel for '98-up due to engine warm-up emissions problems for the 50-state model with OBD-II.

I have the exhaust in front of the rear tire also.

It was stock on mine. No discoloration. Perhaps this might happen in a southern climate.

In a northern climate(like mine) the exhaust will cause the rim to be slightly pitted. Luckily it hasn't caused enough damage to need to replace the rim. It's cosmetic. From 5-6 feet away you really don't notice any problem. I still have my original exhaust after 7 years and 168K. Perhaps all the highway driving I do has minimized the potential problem.

It was a recall for original owners up to 60,000 miles. Didnt get it time and my wheel are wasted. The actually start to pit and corrode. The centercap actually turns green due to to the chroming process. If they want the crome to stick, Whicj It won't to plastic, They put a thin layer of copper on the areas to be chromed. I know this because being experienced with chrome plating and sandblasting my center caps to paint them silver. Som have good luck some don't I must have been on of the bad ones. I fill my tires and they leak down to 20 lbs in 2 days. Rims are coming off in 2 weeks. Exhaust is moved also.
