Question exhaust on 03 4.2l V6

I see all of these different opinions on exhaust systems for all of these different trucks....

What would be a good exhaust to go with?

I am sure I will be putting an air filter of some sort (K&N?) and at some time will be putting some sort of chip in as well.

My truck is completely stock at the moment and is in need of some exhaust that doesnt have that whinny rice sound. Is it possible to make a V6 sound a little more throaty? I will also be pulling a small toy box behind this truck at times. Is there some exhaust that would do better than others in this department?

Any info would be great. Thanks!!!

I have a 1998 4.2l V6 and I really wanted a deep throaty sounding truck but was afraid that anything i did would sound like a rice burner. Well with some coaxing from a few friends i took my truck in and had straight pipes put in. They cut the pipes off from the cats and ran the pipes straight back from each cat without a muffler. It is really loud and has a surprisingly deep sound. All of my friends say it sounds like a V8 and I had two people yesterday ask me if I had a 350 in my truck. I don't know about flowmasters or gibson or any of the other brands for the 4.2, but the straight pipes sounds really good.

Make sure if you get the straight pipes that you want your truck really loud, because it will be very loud.

On another note, K&N does not make a cold air kit for the 4.2 but I know that AirRaid does and I believe that several other brands do.

Good luck whichever route you take

I had a 2000 regular cab with a 4.2 v6. I added a Gibson exhaust and was disappointed with the results at first i noticed a little more sound and power increase but not enought to justify the expense. I would go with another brand beside Gibson or do the straight pipe thing.

Imo Gibson isn't too bad of exhast for a 4.2L V6. I own a 02 XLT 4.2L and added the gibson exhast last year. Its not a real loud exhast, but it doesn't sound like any rice either! Flowmaster/Gibson either way you can't lose.

I would use the mac catback system , the systems fairly cheap , sounds good and is ceramic coated . They also make a killer intake system for your truck to match .

about the gibson exhaust.....i went to their website the other day and listened to a sound file of the 4.2, and man did it sound awful!!! i am in the same predicament though. i need a good, decently deep sounding exhaust for my 4.2 but i don't know what to go with. i know my truck will never sound like a v8 but i want the closest thing possible. i can't find any sound files for the magnaflow or the flowmaster 40 dual system, but i am leaning towards the flowmaster 40. is this a mistake? is there a better alternative out there? guys i really need some help on this one!

ive put many mufflers on my truck with 4.2lL my favorate was a hooker headers muffler but the welds broke in less than 6 months but because it wasnt supported right and not welded on there was no warranty it sounded the best and felt like it gave me the most.

the cheapest one was an autozone muffler for a firebird/camaro hooked up backwards so it was like a duel out and single in was only $9 so i couldnt complain when my 50 lbs. of clamps and tubing broke that one.

when i had straight pipes it seemed like i had no low end at all and turned the check engine light on

finally i did put the gibson swept side exit on and am very happy with it its not super load but it does have a low tone and it has been on my truck longer than any other muffler. and the swept side exit is good for pulling trailers because it directs the gasses away from the trailer.

but everyone has their own opinions on mufflers and you just have to find one you like.

Spintech???

Can anyone tell me how a Spintech exhaust sounds on a 4.2L. I have been to several web sites and have come up with nothing. I did however find several 3.8L Mustangs. They all sounded extremely well for a v-6. I had to listen for a second to distinguish between a v-8.

My 4.2L Exhaust! Doesnt sound too bad at all

well lets see i used to search this forum for hours and hours finding out if this engine could sound good and it ends here. I finally jus cut my muffler and tailpipe right off, it wasnt the best sound untill i bought a cherry bomb glasspack muffler for $20.00, then it got better gas mileage and made my truck grow some *****! Eventually i was growing tired of the sound so i made a Y pipe clamped that right onto the cherry bomb, and ran 2.5inch duals out the back of the truck. Lastly i welded some really nice 3.5inch 10inch long tips onto the pipes and made it lower sounding and even look nicer. Its got a nice sound to it, not quite a v8 but sounds like a truck still. Trust me you will like it, just get one glasss pack right where u cut out the stock muffler and run duals off of that, no need to gut the cats it will be plenty loud, any other questions see me. Also i got the KN air filter in my truck, it whistles nice like a cold air intake!!!
