Help! I just hacked my stock tailpipe just behind the muffler and I have no idea how to get the dangling tube or the muffler out of those rubber insulator dealies they're hanging from. I wan't to install my new magnaflow cat-back system but I'm stuck. Worse than that, my wife will be home shortly and she will now know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am entering a midlife crisis of sorts if I can't get the thing put back together. That will bring scorn, ridicule and a balancing of the accounts that I am afraid to face at this time in my life. HELP! please....

 

try putting squarting some soapy water on them and try getting some pliars on them and wiggling them off. i guess you need to reuse them, if not cut them off.

 

if i'm thinking right you are talking about the rod coming off the muff. that makes a L bend at the top and tappers out kind of big at the very end keeping it in the rubber thing. if it comes off the muff i don't think you need it (not sure) if so cut the rod right before it enters the rubber thing and pull it out from the tappered side.

When I installed my Magnaflow catback, I shot the hangers (those rubber pieces) with a Simple Green and water solution I mixed up and put in a squirt bottle. Shoot each one real good and let them sit for about 5 minutes. After that they should slip apart with ease.

thanks to reims and big deal i got the pins out of the rubber hangers. But now a bigger? problem.... i can't get the old midpipe to pull off of the back of the y pipe! it is loose but it only wants to budge about 1/8 of an inch and that's it. how did you guys get this bugger to pull free? it seems like the old clamps were really torqed on the larger diameter pipe until it almost conforms to the depression this caused in the smaller diameter pipe. any suggestions for this dilema?

 

On your "mid pipe" edge, where the it joins with the y-pipe, take a hack saw and make a slash cut, carefully not to damage the y-pipe underneath. Then take a crowbar or large screw driver and carefully pry and peel the the mid pipe metal (like peeling a banana) away from the y-pipe. Then gently wiggle the system off the y-pipe. Don't wiggle too much, you may risk of damaging your manifold, then you will be in a world of sh**! This may take some time because you *should* take your time. Don't screw up your truck just because the wifey disapproves such a thing. Take your medicine like man!

BTW, I'm sure you are gonna reuse the rubber hangers and metal pins, do not cut or damage them in anyway! Good luck

 

Very good advise. The only thing I'd add is to enlist the help of a friend to hold the tail of the y-pipe when you're trying to get it loose. As kaliscrew wrote, a screwup at that point would be devastating. Good luck.

Thanks everybody--got it off and got the new one on... even admitted to my wife what I was up to and lived to tell it. The magnaflow sounds great and in conjuction with an airforce one intake and supertuner program my truck seems an awful lot quicker.
