Do Straight Pipes hinder performance?
OK, I am in need of some expert advice...So what better place to ask than here.
Here is my situation, while my 98 F150XLT is in the shop, I have the pleasure of driving a rental 2003 F150XLT with a 5.4L. I have to say that I was very surprised (actually impressed) at the throttle response of the 5.4. My 98 has the stock 4.6 with a Superchip, open K&N Filter along with straight pipes (NO MUFFLERS).
Question I have is: Does this setup actually hurt my performance or should it be helping? I have being reading about back pressure and "Y" pipes and such, but the more I find the more confused it all becomes. Some expert advice would be appreciated.

No brick sh_itt-n happening here.
. Just a need for advice (of which you gave - thanks). The new cobra hood (just out of the shop today
) will hopefully take my mind of the low end torque issue, but it will be something to experiment with.
Thanks guys

It should help top end, and decrease the low end grunt a little. You will usually get better performance with a good quality aftermarket muffler though.
