magnaflow question

I have a 2000 5.4l 4x4 and am looking at replaceing the stock muffler with a manaflow. I am going to be pulling a trailor so I prety much think I have to go with a side exit. What i am wondering is if i replace the stock muffler and keep the stock tail pipe will i gain or loose any low end tork. Shoul i replace the factory y pipe and go to a 3 inch tail pipe. Is their that much of a difference bewteen 2.5 or 3 inch pipe. Does the factory y pipe make that much of a difference. Any thoughts

I used to have a Magnaflow on my truck, and the low-end torque felt the same or improved. There was definitely no loss felt.

I am looking to sell this muffler if you are interested. It was in use for maybe 2 months at most.

Good luck!

If you're going to replace muffler and tailpipe (as noted in your post) why not consider the Magnaflow 15609 catback system. I have it installed on my truck. I tow two different trailers at work almost daily, and it's worked out great. With this system you get all 3" mandrel bent tubing, a stainless muffler, and a 4" polished stainless angle cut exhaust tip. The system uses all stock mounting points and exits in the stock location. I have a chip and an intake kit installed on my truck, so I can't say how much performance I picked up via this system. All I can say is that I really like it. Don't think you can miss with this system.

Despite what I had once thought, the Maganflow #15609 system is not stainless. The only thing that is stainless is the tip. It is a very good system and I haven't heard anyone complain about it. But this is what I would do for maximum power and torque with a good modest tone:

Cut the factory y-pipe out
Use a 90 deg mandrel bent elbow (2.5" dia)
A well designed y-pipe (dual 2.5 to single 3") (Magnaflow, Flowmaster make good ones)
SISO 3" straight through muffler (I prefer Magnaflow)
3" Maganflow mandrel bent tail pipe

Add a tip if you please. About $200 in parts. A good shop should charge $50-100 to install it all.

I did the Mag 15609 kit and AirforceOne intake at the same time and I did have a noticeable lift in torque and HP. I am now wearing out my '01 Screw and it tows my trailers better. I think it's a very good combo and the sound is bad(in a good way )

Boy, I wish I lived where you do if you could get the whole system you described and installation for $250 - $300. I shopped around and it cost me $80 for installation and another $30 to weld the whole system up. And that was for installation of the pre-fabricated Magnaflow catback system. I got a decent price on the catback system itself and paid around $400 for it alone. You guys up north must have a whole lot of competition or something if you get can a system that much cheaper.

Through word of mouth I got introduced to a good Meinke Shop here in town, my first visit was regular price. After the way I was treated and the service, I brought a few of my buddies, since then I've gotten good kick backs for the added business....
My Dynamax Turbo Muffler with side exit and dual tips only ran me $115.00
including installation.

Find a good shop and bring them some business, some of these guys will return the favor.

Ouch! $110 to install the Magnaflow system using the stock hanger locations and one weld? I have heard people install that system in their driveways in about 30 minutes. I do not mean any flames for you. I would attempt to do my own installation of a kit, but I do not trust myself to weld car exhaust, exspecially a custom one.

Maybe we have a lot of competition. This is the Motor City, and a lot of people get aftermarket exhausts for new and old cars. The big chains tend to cost more and do less custom work. Probably more overhead. I have received high quotes as well. You just need to find the right places through recomendations. I paid $60 to weld in a temporary repalcement pipe on one of my cars (ripoff IMHO). I was quoted $100 to replace the muffler on my current car, and 3 feet of pipe bent over the rear axle. I paid $25 or $30 labor to install a Flowmaster muffler, and re-use the factory tip. Same place gutted my cat and replaced the main exhaust gasket for $40.

Just need to find the good places. I know of another shop that has excellent service and prices, based on recomendations of another car owner group.

Really, what I described is two cuts with a torch (right before the factory y-pipe), 6 welds of pipe (or clamps), and maybe some new hangers. 1 hour if the guy take long smoke breaks.

And typical exhaust shops like where you had work done make it even more cost effective to purchase pre-bent tail pipes. Couldyou imagine what a place like that would charge for 6 feet of pipe with the bends over the axle? I bet a lot more than $45 or $80 for dual.

Anyway, the lesson learned is to sho paround, take to people with custom exhausts that you know, work with, or even at the gas station while filling up.

Well i talked to a few shops and one said i could get a magna flow muffler with a 2.5 in and a 2.5 out, with a new pipe for $160. What i need to know is their a noticeable difference bewteen 2.5 and 3 inch tail pipes. If not i think i will just keep the stock pipe and just replace the muffler. Any thoughts
