looking for some performance and sound

You might have seen my posts asking about chips, oil, and sound systems. Well now i'm getting together what i want to do with the exhaust.

I have read about the flowmaster 40, 40 delta, and 50. I am looking for that mustang throaty sound, but I also want a performance increase..

For my 5.4 off roader what should i look for?

Also I do not like the typical look of dual exhaust, can I opt for different tips? The 3" are fine I am curious if there are different designs or looks. I have seen several different styles on truck but didn't know if they were flow master or not.

If you want performance and sound, I'd stay away from a baffle muffler such as Flowmaster. Flowmaster has a signature sound to it which is what sells them. The straight through design works much better and can sound good too. Lots of options to choose from. Are you looking for a kit, or a custom setup? With a custom setup, you cna get whatever tips you want. Big Exhaust has a bunch to look at with generalyl good prices. There are many other places that sell tips as well.

I would go with a flowmaster, i have had the 40 series and the 50, the 40 series (regular) is pretty loud even on my little v-6. i got the 50 series (delta flow) because the 40 was to loud inside on the long trips with my boat. if you want it to be loud, go with the 40 series, but if you want something that still has sound outside but not as loud inside go with the 50 series (delta flow), on both of them i noticed some hp increase, mostly low end power, but they both felt the same performace wise, i havent had any experiences with a 40 series (delta flow). hope this helps.......

I was told by the exhaust tech that installed mine that the 40 Delta Series and the Regular 50 series have the same sound.

I definitely picked up noticeable perf on my '01 4x4 Screw with the Mag 15609 kit and AF1 intake. It has the deep throaty rumble but not too obnoxious. I like it and torque and HP are improved.

I agree with APT if you are looking for a nice sound with Performance then stay away from flowmaster. I would suggest either Borla (my personal choice) or a Magnaflow both of which will give a great sound and increase peformance. They are botha straight thru design whereas flowmaster use redirectional baffles which actaully inhibits flow. There are plenty of people who like Flowmaster and that is there own personal choice but I myself think they sound like S*** and are not very good. You will not regret Borla or Magnaflow howveer you may regret the flowmaster as many others have. I suggest you go to www.borla.com and www.magnaflow.com and see what they have. I myself have been using Borla since 1988 and will not use anything else ever again. When really accelarating hard the truck almost has a big block sound.

Go with Magnaflow, stay away from Flowmaster at all costs. I have been there done that...loss of power annoying drone, and a sound that I didnt like. Magnaflow or Borla are what you should go with.

I have the SISO magnaflow with 3" pipe on my 98 f150 4.6 and I love it. It is nice and throaty when you're easy on the gas, like the mustangs. And when you get on the gas, it has a nice rumble to it, but not excessively loud. It is also barely noticeable at speed on the interstate, no resonating sound like borla or flowmaster.

Well mattman I hate to tell you but the Borla does not have any type of resonating sound what so ever on the freeway. In fact the exhaust can barely even be heard unless you really get on the gas hard causeing the truck to down shift intro second gear. Resonating is usally caused by flwomaster due to the baffled chamber design of the exhaust which neither Borla or Magnaflow have.

I have the Flowmaster 40 Series on my 5.4 V8 and it sounds great. It is alittle to loud on road trips but I deal with it. I really like Flowmaster but that is just me. I have had Magnaflow before and they sound great also. I noticed Magnaflow wasn't as loud at idle, which I didn't like.

I really like my Gibson. Two buddies of mine have purchased the same system after seeing/hearing mine. They do not have a loud tone like a flowmaster, they just give it a more powerful sound. Sound good off the line and you hear nothing on the interstate unless you really kick it. Mine is on a '01 4X4 Screw. That along with the K&N really helped performance. It felt lethargic before but has great pep now.

Richard D, I am not going against what you are saying about borla, just going from past experiences. I have a buddy with a tahoe that has a 350 in it and he has a new borla exhaust. At highway speeds in the back seat, the noise is very annoying. But it just may be his certain setup, I'm not too sure about it. He is running duals with the tips at the corners. Personally I like the magnaflow, but thats just me.

I also was simply saying what I have experianced for my self I have owned a Borla systems since 1988 on my 88 F150 and currently running Borla on my 97 F150 and have never had any type of resonating what so ever. Which is merely what i was pointing out. Maybe your buddies problem is simply the fact that well it's a freaking Ch***y right? LOL My 97 truck in fact when you really get on the gas has a big block sound to it at least tht is what many have told me when hearing it.

I agree, go with either magnaflow or borla.

Hey guys, what are you meaning when you refer to resonating sound?

My magnaflow is pretty loud, but I also had it dumped.
