6 week report on Gibson 3" single SS
Thought I'd check in and pass on what I learned about the exhaust I mounted. It was the Gibson stainless 3" single out side swept. I bought it because it is featured as one of the quitest after market exhaust (it was) and because it was specially designed for to enhance low end torque,(uh huh..). I've decided there is no aftermarket exhaust that will improve low-end performance..Having said that, I still like the exhaust. The tone has been nice and it looks good if you remember to buff the brown-green sheen off the exhaust pipe before you mount it. I did improve it though. After talking with a friend of mine at the local muffler shop, he had a suggestion that did not make a lot of sense to me but he turned out to be correct. We inserted a 18" by 2 5/8s" resonator in front of the exhaust. I realized this had a chance at improving the low end torque somewhat, but I was surprised when it increased the sound by a couple of decibels. That was a welcome free-be. He called it, I never would of guessed it. It also seemed to help get rid of the "dead" sound when I slack-off the throttle. This system is definitely a keeper now.

So the resonator takes you pretty much to the Y connector from the cats? I always thought a resonator was to quiet an exhaust down.
I have the same system, just the Aluminized version. I too, am pleased with it, but would like just a "bit" more sound at the pipe, not in the cab. Did the increase in sound occur at the tailpipe or in the cab?
What is the make/model of the resonator?
Thanks

Triton: It is aluminized steel. It is inline between the Y pipe and the front inlet of the Gibson.
Mitch: Yes it is louder than before, that surprised me. I know for sure, because now I can hear it standing behind the truck at idle, could not hear it for the fan noise before. It seemed to increase both tail pipe and cab sound equally, but then no problem because the sound is about still quiter an most.
I'll try to check on a part #.

UMMM... Very interesting concept. I've been looking for a way to increase the sound "just a tad", but didn't want to get a new muffler. I think I'll have to check into the resonator!! Have you been able to notice any additional increase in torque?

About to install my SS Gibson.. I am not
'looking' for more low end torque, but I
do NOT want to lose what I got...
What is your experience in that area?
I also will be putting the AirAid on at the
same time... waiting a bit and then the
Superchip, which sits here on my desk...
Also, in the boxing that the exhaust came in,
there is a "head pipe" listed? I have a
2/5 " x 3" piece that is ALREADY attached to
the muffler. Is THAT the so called HeadPipe?
Thanks.

DOC: Yeah I lost some low end torque by the ol' seat of pants meter. But I did the exhaust last: air intake, then Superchip, then exhaust. Maybe in the reverse order you won't even notice. But all in all, still worth it. My mod seemed to get some back and the high end is there if I ever get the chance to use it. I can spin 'em again w/o cheating (of course, there are so many variables there..). Yes, the head pipe attaches to the rear of the Gibson.
