MN : Where did you mount your driving/fog lights? and what claim to fame does an X-pipe have?

Jimmar, Check out the link in my signature and you'll see where my driving lights are mounted. The x-pipe is suppose to provide less restriction to exhaust flow than the "Y" pipe. Or at least what I've been told.

You use an X pipe to "mix" the exhaust from each side of the engine when putting in a true dual system. It is supposed to make up for some of the downstream (not at the manifolds) scavenging loss you get with separate pipes all the way through because of cylinder firing order. Older applications or one's with space constraints use an H pipe but it doesn't work as well.

I am not a big fan of true dual exhausts except in the few cars that they were really made for, such as those oldies with the side pipes. Problems with them are tuning the scavenging, extra weight, sometimes many more bends, etc. They just don't make sense under a lot of vehicles.

That said, I have seen some pretty disgusting Y pipe to single applications that make me wonder what they were thinking. I wondered about my 2001 Screw where the "Y" isn't really a "Y" and one side has about 6 bends in it, at least 2 90 degress. That has got to hurt. I wonder why they didn't Y further back where they could have made it more gradual without adding a lot of tubing weight. Has anyone tinkered with this notion, i.e. the y between the cross members? My gut tells me that properly done (from a diameter perspective) this would outperform a true dual.

Chuck

IMud- The Y-pipe is a poor design. The drivers side pipe is squeezed down to 2.25" at it's Y entry and it enters at a very poor angle for flow.

Cool

Hi All

I think the stock Y pipe sucks. If i went with an X pipe would i need to use dual three chamber mufflers ( flow master ) so i dont lose to much back presure?. Right now i have a 40 series flow master single in dual out with the stock Y pipe. (40 series 2 chamber) I also will be installing headers as soon as i can afford them. Can i expect more power with this set up? and a good sounding exhaust?. Thanks for the help.

Larry

I forgot to ask what kind of mufflers you are using? also did you lose any bottom end power with the X pipe or did you gain some?.By any chance do you have headers on your truck?.

Thanks Larry

Larry, It actually felt like I gained some bottom end. Just stock exhaust in front of the x-pipe. I had the work done at muffler shop in town, that does a lot of custom exhaust stuff for racers. When they put my truck up on the rack and looked at it. They said that Ford actually did a nice job of designing the exhaust on the SuperCrew. Go figure! They put the x-pipe in on the out board side of the Cad's . The mufflers are glass packs that sound really nice! Not too loud but a really nice tone to them.

1st person I've seen that has true dual and glasspacks besides me. Don't have an x-pipe. Click on like below to see pics.
