Question What causes "popping" / "gurgling?"

My 4.2L with FM 40 duals would gurgle, while my 4.6L wouldn't, unless I stomped the gas and let off in nuetral. Now that I have 3" mufflerless catback turn-down...it rarely gurgles / pops. To tell the truth, I kinda like the popping. What causes it?

I believe the popping or gurgling is unburnt gas exploding in the exhaust, which is why you hear it after you let off it from punching it. The gas was fed at a large amount, then all of a sudden not, but there is still fuel in the cylinder that is exhausted out and fires in the pipes, after the fact.

I'm sure if I'm wrong, I'll hear about it.

Back in Ohio, we called it "cackling". Setting the wayback machine to 1981, in high school, my slant 6 Valiant would cackle good. My dad tuned the carb rich to improve performance, decrease gas mileage, with the end result being a good cackle out the glasspack.

Here in the panhandle of Florida we call this phenomenon "Talking Back". As in listen to her "talk back" when I get on it.

"Talk Back" is great!

I've heard the word "cackle" used to describe what a bunch of hens do. "Cackle like a bunch of hens" also describes a group of women lively discussing something.

i have had this since my cat back was put on the truck. i had no idea what it was.

i checked the pipe to make sure it was not hitting the spare, or right rear shock and everything looked fine.

i feel better now knowing that this is a 'normal' situation with the install. i have been listening more for it now since reading the post, and it is always after i back off from harder acceleration.

thanks for the info.

I believe it is the timing. When you let off the gas the timing hasn't retarded yet so it is firing later. That's my thought.
