Exclamation FLOWMASTER 40's

Ok, I am thinking about running flowmaster 40's delta series with single in dual out and running 2 1/2" pipe out the back corners with chrome tips. I was wondering how much this might cost me and is it a good idea? Comments/suggestions/criticism is welcome. Thanks.

I just had dual 40 series flowmasters installed. two pipes all the way through to rear passengers side (like factory) I have a 99 F150 SC 4.6L V8. It's got awesome tone, a bit more cab noise and some real growl when you hit it. I'm glad I did it. Cost $360.

I really like my FM 40's, but i wish i had the ravin Z33. From what ive been hearing the Z33 sounds better than the FM40. i dont about that mine sounds really good and seems to be getting better with age. just my thoughts.

Cool

I had a FM40 (Delta Flow) put on last year for about $330. $200 for labor and pipe, $70 for FM40 and $60 for tips. I really dig the sound. Not too loud not too soft. It really makes a difference too if you are going to have the pipes straight out the back or out the sides. That will really change the in cabin sound.

To me the 40 (Delta) is pretty darn mild, so if you want something more aggressive I would think about the straight 40 or even a 30. I was in the dark about which one to get so I just asked alot of people and especially talked to the muffler shop. Go luck either way and let us know what you get.

i agree, the delta series dont sound nearly as mean as the regular 40's. If youre looking for a good growl, i say go with the regular 40's. either way it will sound much better than stock. good luck!

Two questions I have:

First 5150PhD,
Isn't the FM 40 series louder than the 30 series? I always thought that the 40 was the loudest in the FM line.

Second BJays Red 150,
Doesn't taking out the factory 'y', also take out the o2 sensor? I thought that's where it was.

I could be wrong on both assumption. Thanks for answering them.

Martin63,

"i wish i had the ravin Z33" Don't kid yourself until you hear that muffler on a truck exactly like yours. I still think the FM 40, 50, Magnaflow, or Dynomax flow-throughs sound better than those silly Ravin's, and I don't think they are tuned to scavenge the exhaust like the FM's. They are just another marketing gimmick that will go away soon (i hope) - just because they are new doesn't mean they are better.

Sorry about the bitter tone - I am totally happy with the FM Force II on my 5.4 and for some reason I just hate those Ravin' muffs.

Hey split...
I think the 30's are louder than the 40's with delta flow. I have a buddy with 30's and my truck is noticably quieter with the delta flow 40's. The 30's might be quieter than the straight 40's if you read the Flowmaster page. Flowmaster really needs to setup wav files like borla does to give you an idea about the sound. Either way hope it helps.

Ravin and a marketing gimmick?
Get real! Have you yourself ever expericenced the performance of the Ravins? Don't go around nocking something that you don't know about. I can't speak for Magnaflow and Dynomax, but I can say that the FM 40 on my other truck was the biggest waste of money! It doesn't matter how loud the radio goes, you can still hear that POS ringing in your ears in the cab. The Ravin on the other hand, at WOT and highway speeds, you can carry on a conversation with out even raising you voice. Just because something is new doesn't mean it's bad. I figure the Ravins will go away about the time that you do (I hope).

Thumbs up

I have the 4.2 in my truck so of course I was looking to get some extra kick. I had everything from where the cat's join removed. A new Y connector was added going into a 3". I used a magnaflow single in dual out resulting in 2.5"'s out the rear with an oval shaped tip. Total was $340 and I love it. It's not obnoxiously loud, inside or out and has a nice, deep tone. Actually, it's surprisingly quiet standing outside while in idle and again, not overly loud when in full throttle from outside. It gave me a little extra power but it's the look and sound that I appreciate most.
P.S. I also appreciate the added rumble/vibration in the cab I get the first few minutes of oper when I'm at a stop. Pretty cool

Amamski,

Well I have to admit you got me there... I only heard a Ravin' on a chevy and was not impressed. I suppose I had better go down to Midas and see about demo'ing a Ravin on a 5.4L F-150 before I get all bent about it. Then I could have a real 'apples to apples' comparison.

I will even admit that the FM 40 American Thunder on Mustangs and older trucks sounds cheap and tinny... I prefer the low and throaty FM SUV 50's and FM delta flow 50's myself. After the FM force II on my truck I could spin the tires easily... I figure about 15-20hp from my butt-o-meter -- it has a similar volume and deeper tone compared to my wifes 2001 'Stang GT.

I am a mechanical engineer and have taken 2 fluid dynamics classes way back in college... I didn't exactly do any calcs but it looks like flowmaster's claim that their mufflers scavenge the exhaust using the pulse energy sounds reasonable, while the Ravin's don't seem to have that sort of technology. I really don't know if that makes a better muffler either way but it makes me happy.

Howie--

I didn't mean to sound like a ***** or anything. I could only imagine the Ravin on a shi&vee, I probably wouldn't be impressed either.
The FM's are good reliable mufflers, and I can and will give credit when it's due. Like I said, I have another truck with the FM 40 on it, and it sounds decent, but it is way too loud inside the cab. The 'scavenging' of exhaust and the numerous baffles that the FM has would to me increase backpressure. The Ravin is a freeflow type exhaust, there are no baffles for it to combat with, and it sounds great on these trucks. I think there is a specific type of exhaust for each truck. I like the sound of the Fm on a dodge and the dynomax on a chevy, these are 'winning' sound combos in my mind. As a matter of fact, the shop that installed this thing has contacted Ravin about becoming a distributor of their products. The owner told Ravin that he would be willing to drop th FM line to carry the Ravins. (it's pretty bad when the owner of the shop goes to Midas to purchase a Ravin for his own personal truck) As with virtually everything else on this board, it is all a matter of personal opinions and decisions. You like the Flows, and I like the Ravins, who cares, we both own the best truck on the road! They'll be the best no matter what they sound like!
