For a stock v8, I wouldn't get anything bigger than stock 2.5". If you plan on modifying it, performance wise, than I would get a 3" pipe. Good luck!!!

I don't think that would be a problem. If you want a louder exhaust system I would go with the 3". Actually now that I think about it, I would get a 3" on v8 with all those mods definitely

If you can afford it and it's available I would definitely get stainless steel. That way you know that it will never rust and you won't ever have to replace it. If you do the job right the first time, you won't have to re-do it later. Just a thought!

77, the stock exhaust is 2 1/2" at the y where the two head pipes come together. Most of the 3" cat back systems go to 3" behind the y and either a single 3" exhaust pipe or dual 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 exhaust pipes out of a single muffler. Some people have true duals and cut the head pipes behind the cats with a 2 1/2" system on each side. If you do this there needs to be a balance or H pipe installed before the mufflers. This is not a bolt on, out of the box system like the cat backs are. Before you do a lot of changing, think about what you do with your truck. If you do a lot of towing, you don't want to do true duals. If you just want a louder or a better flowing muffler you may just want to change mufflers. With the 5.4 you can go to a 3" system or singal in dual out muffler and not loose any or very little low end.
