Thumbs up WOW! Ravin Z-55 = Growling Thunder!

Just got this bad boy installed today in Oceanside. They gave me a little hitch in my giddy-up regarding the price and I used this site to get them down, but these SoCal guys charge more than Texas. I ended up $325 out the door for catback 3" SI/SO with custom chrome tip. They dropped her off the rack and fired her up and for the first time I heard what the 5.4 is SUPPOSED to sound like - a low badass growl. Two thumbs up. Hard to believe I drove this thing for so long with a skirt on! Haven't heard the competition, but I'm 100% satisfied with the Z-55. How many actual HP gained doesn't really matter much anymore, because it feels and sounds like I've gained 25. The ultimate compliment. My three little nephew and nieces keep asking me to "fire up the rocket boosters!" Nuf said!

Hey ZenAudio,
congrats on your new Ravin' exhaust system!
I've had my Z-55 system for about 3 weeks now. I'm still enjoying the deep throaty sound it puts out. I have SI/DO the rear. I still enjoy turning heads ocassionally at stop signs, when I punch it!

Enjoy the Raivin' and welcome aboard!

Zen glad to hear you like your Z55. I have had mine for a few months now and it sure makes driving the truck FUN. These Ravins are catching on like wildfire.

Mandrel bents are more related to performance than sound. When doing mine I will try to have the mandrel bents, specially if I am paying premium prices.

Question

GoGo:

You deserve much of the credit for turning everyone on to the Ravin. I haven't heard the competitors, so I'm not qualified to compare, but when they first started my truck after the install, I knew I made the right choice. I've put in quite a few miles now and my truck sure feels faster!

Quick question. I went with 3" throughout, but it was custom tubework from Midas. The tailpipe section after the muffler is not mandrel bent (I was under the impression it was going to be)? Is this splitting hairs or should I make this an issue, i.e., can I get even better sound/performance, or are we looking at a tenth of a percent and no difference in sound?

Thanks guys, check for my post in engines as I now need to choose an FIPK and I'm doing it based on your recommendations.

Turnin' heads in Orange County,
Mike

Thanks Zen. When I posted the first Ravin message I figured I'd get flamed and blitzed by the FM, Gibson, and other muffler religions. But figured what the heck, it was/is one of the best sounding exhaust systems I'd ever heard (for a truck) - and I've had them all.

Wouldn't want it on my 70 Chevelle SS though. The Ravins are too smooth for a big block Chevy IMO. But fit perfect for the newer trucks/cars, and blocks.

Yep your splitting hairs. Enjoy the system

Thanks for the reply. Glad to hear you think the mandrel issue is a hairsplitter; the Midas guy did great welds and it sounds great so I'm satisfied. I can't imagine driving without it. One more quick question for you. What is the K&N Gen II "cold induction" setup? Isn't the K&N warm air, i.e. open element in the engine compartment? I've read all the debates and am leaning towards the AirForce One, mostly based on looks/build quality (under the assumption that all of the FIPK's perform about the same). Have you modified the K&N to get cold air in?

Mike

P.S. How do you like your Line X? I couldn't be happier with mine - well worth the bucks!

Zen "cold air" is simply the verbage I am used to. It is the Gen II FIPK or something like that. I always call them cold air inductions, just dated myself I guess. The Air Raid is probably the same. Go with it. I kind of like the looks of that better too but already have the K&N.

Not warm air, even though it is in the engine. They are all [mostly] in the engine compartment. Cold air while moving, less restriction on air intake.

Although on my Vette I run twin tubes down to the front air dam for really cold (relative) air. And on my Chevelle I have a cowl induction for high pressure (colder) air intake when I stomp on it.
