Question leave it, or go flowmaster?

I have a 2000 4.2L. Some guy at the muffler shop said that putting a flowmaster in my truck is not worth it, and that I should leave the stock mufffler in. HE said there is no change in sound or horsepower. I think he is full of SH*&.
I want a 2 chamber single outlet flowmaster. Is it worth it, and does it increase power?

Thanks,
Fake

fakefvc,

You are correct in your assumption that HE is full of S**T. The 2 chamber will definately change the sound of your V6..some describe the sound of 40 series flowmasters on the 4.2L's as V8ish . You can expect a much deeper, meaner sound. I would also suspect a slight increase in power, although changing just the muffler wont give the same performance as a mandrel-bent system from the cat back would. If you do decide to do the piping also,i wouldnt recommend anything bigger than 2.5" piping or you will lose some torque. Either way you go, id bet the sound alone would make you happy! Hope this helps.

Thanks dirtslinger & Luis_Anchondo

I plan on using just the flowmaster muffler, and leaving the stock exhaust pipe. I also plan on buying a K&N filter at the same time.
My mind is set on flowmaster. But what thing diffrently would you guys do? With the K&N and Flowmaster, how much HP increase will I see/feel, and how much better MPG will I get?
Also, what is the better of the two, 40 or 50 series for my 4.2L?
Thanks for all the help

I have a 4.6 and just put Flowmaster 40 (single in dual out) with a catback system and also have a K&N airfilter. The flowmaster definately improved my performance and sounds great. I went with 2 inch pipes because I wanted a throaty rumble but not to much. Also, mine will be a tow vehicle so I did not want to sacrifice torque. I would reccomend the Flowmaster, I have certaily been happy with mine. As to the dealer saying it is not worth it, thats a bunch of bull. The stock muffler is ill balanced and looks like a water heater. When I put my flowmaster on my engine ran smoother and seemed to breath easier.

I have the same thing you are looking at. the sound is great, I do not believe it added any HP, if it did not much. It does make the truck run smoother. I thinking about the K&N filter but I am not sure yet. Does it actually help with the HP?

Fakefvc,
I too have a 2000 4.2L and I put on a Flowmaster 40 series single in dual out, 3 1/2 inch bell tips, and let me just tell you now that you might not want that guy at the muffler shop going any where near your truck. He couldn't be further from the truth. The Flowmaster makes a tremendous difference in sound and a slight increase in horse power. If you want serious sound go with th 40 series because it is the loudest, also why not go with the dual pipes it looks really good with the right tips IMPO.
but thats just my $.02

Flowmasters run around $85 for the muffler, but you could probaly get them a little cheaper through a catalog though. I got a series 40 added to my 5.4. It has (2) 2.5" pipes coming out of it with a 3" inlet. Warning.... This muffler will resonate!!! Sounds great on the V8.

My father works for Arvin Industries the company that makes the FlowMasters. He has been doing the exhaust distribution for the company for 25+ years now. Just swapping to a Flow master will change the sound if you don't incress the diameter of the pipe from the cat back at least, you will have no appreciable gains in horsepower.
