Maybe Buying an Exc.

An Excursion that is if I can find one. Are there any certain years better than others and what should I look for as far as issues with the motor.

The 5.4's are underpowered if you are going to be towing, but reliable and a bit thirsty. The V-10's are all good, but very thirsty. The 7.3 diesels are good. The 6.0 diesels are bad.

Oh and ask the dealer a print out on the oasis report that will tell you everything that has been fixed or replaced on the truck.

Considering the last year of the Excursion was 05, that was still early 6.0 and should be avoided. The only thing the 6.0 has going for it in the Excursion is the Torqshift 5 speed automatic.

You won't save any money with a diesel. Diesel fuel is more expensive than premium gas in most places and maintenance costs on a diesel are a lot higher.

6 mpg - something was wrong and/or it was being driven like it was stolen. I have a friend that used a V-10 Excursion to tow a 7000# cargo trailer and they got 9 towing and 12 to 14 unloaded.

The family excursion in my family hauled around the 5 kids and parents for about 3 years then I drove it when I got my license, then my brother drove it, and not my other brother drives it. Needless to say, after 3 teenage drivers, it gets about 8mpg, has about 130xxx miles on it and still tows whatever we throw at it. We haul a Mastercraft X-30 wakeboard boat to the lake at least 20 times a year, haul the trailer with a scout on it to the desert a couple times a year and other various towing we do. It has the V10, 4x4 and 4:11 gears. Thing is a beast. I have taken her to some serious off roading places (for stock) and it performs flawlessly. The only problem we have had with it is it blew a spark plug at 107xxx miles. I havent driven or town anything with a diesel excursion so I couldnt compare but either way you cant go wrong with it!
