Hi,
1. I put 9007 Showoff purple 100/80W on the truck. I don't think that they have higher output. Other than that they're OK, don't burn the harness . Installed fog lamps - they help a lot!
I heard positive responses on Eurolite 65/55W bulbs (eBay $20). They are stock wattage but 50% more output.
2. I have 55W reverse - I don't think they have higher output At least it's not enough for me... I guess you read the thread on how to install additional reverse lights, right?
3. Have not thought about brakes – don't want to scare people behind me
Hope that helps,
Alex.

I've added 80/100 watt Krypton Quartz light blue headlight bulbs (from Competition Specialties) with the heavy duty wiring harness to my F-150 and the results were pretty good. Adding a set of Hella 550 Driving lights behind the grill with 130 watt bulbs in them REALLY made a difference. (They're wired with a relay to come on with the high beams.) I'm still looking for higher output bulbs for the fog lamps.

As for backup lights, I added a single Hella 550 mid-beam under the bumper with a relay. It did a heck of a lot more good than the (supposedly) 55 watt replacement bulbs for the factory back up lights.

Hope that helps.

2stroked,
Where did you get the heavy harness from? How much?
Is it for headlights only or you've replaced everything under the hood?
I heard that higher wattage bulbs could melt the harness so I want that heavy-duty thing...
Thanks in advance,
Alex.

AB,

I got all of my bulbs and the Heavy Duty harness from a place called Competition Specialties. It's a little mail order joint that doesn't even have a web site as I recall. (Been a while since I last ordered.) Great service though!

As for the HD harness, it runs from your battery to the headlights and includes all wiring, 2 relays, fuse, etc. The reason you need it is - as you said - if you draw too much current (from high output bulbs) through small gage wiring, it can fry the stock harness. You might also note that you're not getting as much light out of the bulbs as you had planned. The harness takes about 30 minutes to install and I've had in it my '97, '99 and now my '02. As I recall, it was around 40 bucks and has been well worth the investment for me. You just have to see it when I nail the high beams!

Hope that helps!

AB,

I had to do some digging, but found the name and number of the place I got my bulbs and HD harness. It's called Competition Limited and the phone number is (734) 464-1458. It appears to be a mom & pop kind of operation, but they're very helpful. They do not appear to have a web site though. Good luck!

AB,

Thanks for the information because I'm about to place an order for some bulbs for a friend with an F-350. The web site must be a recent development. I'd highly recommend the Krypton Quartz HID Blue bulbs. IMHO, you can run the 70/80 watt bulbs with your stock harness. Going to the 80/100 watt beauties definitely requires the harness. I'd also recommend skipping the 55 watt backup bulbs. They sound good, but they're useless.

Here's another hint. Install your first headlight bulb with your truck about 20 feet away from a clean, flat surface. Check the aiming with one new and one OEM bulb in place. Sometimes the aftermarket bulbs have a slightly different filament position which you may have to compensate for by re-aiming. Once you've verified proper aiming, install the second bulb and check that too.

Enjoy!
