Replacement Keys & Remote - $272.00!

This is without a doubt the worst example of price gouging I've ever seen. I asked the dealer yesterday what it would cost to get another set of keys/remote. My quote: $272:00! I said "I want the Keys, not a doorman to open the truck when I want to get in.

They were serious.... $46 for a key, 79$ to program it (one hour labor), $68 for a remote, $79 to program it... One guy did say that I could try the "on-off, on-off -- 7x thing" the other said that may ruin the chip in the other key and require programming of each.

There must be a more realistic way to get a second set of keys (previous owner lost the other set).

Any ideas?
Thanks!

What my dealer did for the keys

I got additional keys made the day I picked it up.

They cut it on a PATS key, and told me RTFM, program it yourself.
It is a real easy process of turnign the truck on/off with the programed key, then put in the new key turn on/off ( read the maunal for the exact sequence ).

As for the door remote, I don't know about that, did not need a remote itself, only the additional keys.

I think the manual says you can have upto 7 PATS keys in the system. If you follow the manual, I don't see how you can screw it up, I think they are trying to scare $ 68.00 out of you.

I don't recall how much it was to cut the PATS key, that is close if nothing else.

Take a look at this post for a reverse on PATS, if you want it for a backup.

These are more so for if you leave the key in, not clearng it all together. Try a search on PATS to see what you get.

I'd just have the dealer cut the key, and program it yourself, the remote...if you could live with ony one I'd scratch that. Wait until you trash 2 remoted, at least you get closer to your moneys worth from that 1 hours fo shop labor ( wish they would bill increments 15 or 30 min on shop time they might get more business IMHO, but I am sure there is a business reason for charging full hours that I don't know about ).

Do I need to RTFM on programming a remote, or is this a non-consumer thing ?
Is it in my shop manual, I don't have that CDROm with me right away to check and see.
I know you have a fine line between the brotherhood here, and your job, I don't want to compromize either of them, but putting you in a bad place.
If it is a case of RTFM, just tell me I'll do the leg work.

Ok, now im talking about 28.00 to program the keys if you DONT have 2 original keys present. Of course, if you have your 2 keys and want more, you can program the keys yourself.

Programming the remotes should be in the manual too, anyone can do this, but we have plenty of people come to us and want to pay me .3 (about $14) to do it for them. I even have told people that they can read the book and do it themself, but they are like, well id just rather pay you to do it.

Oh yea, that thread on the pats you referenced to, there is no science to that, the guy was way to impatient after causing a pats problem with a chip or something. If he had originally waited about 30 minutes before trying to crank it again after the FIRST time it failed, it would have cranked. What that tow driver told him is bogus.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll deleted that pdf file, since it is BS, and won't talk about it again.
I like to try to help, but BS getting passed around...I don't want to do that.

I'll go RTFM about the remotes.
Good to see that you do incremental hour billing, Some don't, it is a breath of fresh air to see a dealer charging for the work done.

remotes= make sure you do all the ones you want to work at the same time. Cycle the key from off to run eight times, ending in run the eighth time. The locks should cycle. Press any button on tramsmitter, locks should cycle. Press any button on second, third, fourth.... trans., locks should cycle. Turn key to off position. All transmitters you just programmed should work, all previous transmitters not done that time will no longer work.
