Unhappy Big time electrical problems

Newbie in Denver -- 98 F150 XLT 4.6 V8 auto 4x4 - Uncle gave me the truck. Note: It was in a wreck a year ago and the passenger door and front quarter panel were replaced. The passenger-side power mirror and interior light on the passenger door have never worked since that. That's NOT the problem, but it may be a factor.

My battery died, I'm guessing because things stay on by themselves, even when the key is removed. For example, when I park the car & remove the key, I can still hear the heater fan running at low setting, even though it is set to "off" and the vent/heat/AC selector is also "Off". Sometimes the radio will continue to operate with the key removed. I can turn off the radio, but the display clock on the radio remains on.

Occasionally when driving, airbag indicator light will stay lit (not blink, but stay lit). Occasionally, when driving, the 4x4 indicator will blink on and off, although it doesn't seem to affect the transmission.

I've seen these problems posted elsewhere, and I know it's the electrical system, but I'm not capable of fixing it myself. As a newbie, I don't want to get talked into $4,500 in repairs. What kind of $$$ am I looking at? Any advice on repair process? Thanks in advance.

Gerry

as far as accessories, these trucks have a battery saver feature. It automaticaly cuts off power to accessories that are left on. For example, you could leave on an interior light and it will have the power cut off after a few minutes. The switch will still be on, but no power ntil the key is put back in the ignition.

As far as the fan, are you sure you are hearing the heter fan or the cooling fan?

Indicator lights on the dash (4x4 or airbag) indicate a fault code has been tripped. You need a code reader to tell you what code has been tripped and then look up that code (which may be available here through a search)
